Being and Nothingness

In the movie, Andy gets a copy of Being and Nothingness by Jean-Paul Sartre at the bookstore. I've looked the book up and can't make the connection of why he wanted that book and seemed embarrassed by it. The only thing I can think of is that he is really smart and the whole dumb thing is an act? But it is hard to come across as stupid (and why would you want to) when you aren't.

any thoughts?

He didnt want the book for himself,as soon as he walks out the store he hands it to one of the firemen Andy, and when he does Andy replies "Thanks Chris i was too embarassed to go in there and ask for it myself".

"When your down here with me you'll float too!!"

reply

But Andy was the one that got it. Why? Andy is kind of a simpleton, this book is kinda heavy subject matter.

reply

Well i dont know much about the book but im guessing that if Andy did'nt want to go in for it himself as he was too embarrased to then maybe its because the book is a soppy love story,or poetry book,or something along these lines and that he didnt want people to know about it in case they made fun of him for it.Or it could be that he just likes to keep some things private to himself and this was one of those things.

"When your down here with me you'll float too!!"

it's a psychological book, very advanced reading. Like he was "playing dumb" and didn't want anyone to think he was really smart, and that's just a freaky thing to do.

reply

Ah rite, well if thats the case then yes i agree it is a freaky thing to do.

Maybe Andy was the one buying it for someone else, with Chris as his front.

*Strokes beard* Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.

I think Andy's character is a bit of a wild card. Remember when he won the boxing match and put (I believe) Damon Wayans down? Also, he was in a few of the bar scenes hanging out with some ladies. Andy reading Sarte? I wouldn't put it past him, who knows what he is really like, but honestly, I think that maybe Andy has this feeling that people think of him as a simple guy, not someone deeply rooted in studying philosophy, and for that he is embarrassed.

yeah, he seems more like an al camus fan.

I always took this as another bit of amusing absurdity from Steve Martin's pen. One of my favorite scenes in this or any other movie is when Steve's Character, C.D. buys a newspaper out of a newspaper box, reads the headline, starts screaming and puts money in the box, opens the door and puts the paper back in. It had nothing whatsoever to do with the plot, but was very much in keeping with Steve Martin's sense of humor.

Incidentally, Steve Martin majored in philosophy at California State University, Long Beach in the early 1960s.

I dunno maybe he's a very ditzy clueless person who's good at reading like someone i know
She's like Andy, but is always reading so people make fun of her thinking why are you so stupid and you read books i don't know why, but now she doesn't get books that are intelligent she always asks us to
I don't know about Andy's situation though
