Favorite segment

I just adore Robot Carnival. It is without question one of my favorite movies of all time. I remember watching it for the very first time about 13 years ago, and falling in love with this film. All the segments were superb, but my absolute favorite was Yasuomi Umetsu's "Presence". I have been a huge fan of Yasuomi Umetsu since I first discovered his work on Megazone 23 Part II. The character designs and animation for Presence were so incredibly gorgeous, it just took my breath away! IMHO, this was Yasuomi's finest work ever - the pinnacle of artistic sophistication, refinement, and imagination. Presence was one of the most beautifully poignant stories I have ever experienced. A young married scientist creates a beautiful android girl who then apparently falls in love with him. But it was a love he could not allow... This tragic and most unusual love story was made even more haunting by the fact that the voice actress for the android girl in the English language version, Lisa Michelson had passed away after recording the voice. A dedication to the memory of Lisa Michelson was shown after the ending credits.

'Presence' was one of my favourite segments as well, and I am planning on cosplaying the robot girl for an anime convention soon. I just rewatched Robot Carnival the other day, and the animation was wonderful. Pieces of art like 'Presence', and the other segments that compose Robot Carnival, are not common nowadays.

For me, a close second favorite would be "Starlight Angel". It had such a beautiful dream-like quality about it. The music was nice too!

Yeah, as a kid, I adored "Starlight Angel"! The musical score to it was really sweet, don't you think? :)

reply

Yep! I should also add that the story SETTING for "Starlight Angel" was probably what inspired the name of the movie, Robot Carnival.

I Thought "Nightmare" was the best. I was surprised when I discovered the same directer did "Akria" and "Steamboy". I also thought "Franken's Gears" was magnificent. The guy who did that did one of the segments of the "Animatrix".

Presence and Cloud. Can't decide between the two, I just love them too much, each in it's own way. Cloud impressed me because so many things were told without a single word ... just beautiful and haunting.

Do you know how she died?
She was the voice of Satsuki in the Fox version of Totoro.

I finally found my old tv-dubbed copy of Robot Carnival, taped off of Sci-Fi channel back in '93 or '94. Ah ! The good old days of sci-fi channel, before it became the 'Stargate sg-1 channel' and there weren't any crappy CGI monster of the week vs. eurotrash commandoes movies of the week !
This movie stuck with me for a long time, 'Presense' especially...it almost reminded me of a 'twilight zone' episode, and I'd been telling the story about that segment to my wife for eight years ! She finally watched it and cried at the end. What a great film...I just wish they'd play more anime on TV, dubbed, subtitled, whatever.

Someone had mentioned on Lisa Michelson's IMDB message board that she died from a car accident in Los Angeles.

It looks like I'm three years too late for the convo. Anyway, hands down, "Presence" was my favorite. It cut so very deep, and was such a brilliantly emotional piece. Such psychologically heavy themes are generally taboo with American audiences, but in Japan it is a common occurrence. They are not afraid to stir a person at their core and make them think about what they are watching. That is what I like about Japanese art, including modern arts like animation. Deeply moving piece. Cried so hard for the innocent android. Everything was well done. Shed one last tear of joy for the little toy robot representing our android flying off to where all the pure things go.

I loved Presence and Starlight Angel, but I think my favorite was Cloud. It was simple, moving, and beautiful.

Deprive.

Presence is a close second.

I love "Presence," "Starlight Angel," and the one (I can't think of the name now) about the two dueling robots in 19th century Japan. However, my favorite may have to be "Cloud."

Like another poster said, "Cloud" was so incredibly beautiful, but also simple and quietly poignant. It gave you a lot to mull over, and for me personally I was overwhelmed with deep feelings and a general sense of melancholy.

Whole movie is great, though.

I must say Cloud was my favorite. I just had a boy a little while back and watching the robot child stumble and fall in the begaining nearly brought tears to my eyes since it reminds me of him so much. Even his facial features are very simular to the robot child. I must admit I don't totally get all the deeper messages of Cloud but still enjoy it very much and found it beautiful and peaceful. Cloud reminds me of all the wonder and challenges in life that I look forward to prepairing him for and how much I love him.

They're all good. I like the Disney Tokyo segment. I also like the segment with the little boy robot walking through history. The segment where the adult robot saves the little girl is also pretty cool.

My favorite has always been "Starlight Angel". I like Deprive as well. "Presence" is a great segment but it always makes me so sad.

I also enjoyed "A Tale of Two Robots".
This bit:
"Look, the Rising Sun of Japan!"
"The sun is setting, nitwit!"
Makes me laugh every single time.

Gory stories, we do that. And your host, a talking rat.

I've only seen this once, so I don't have a favorite quite just yet.
