::gasp::

O_O! There's only one topic for this board?!
;_; I guess this movie isn't well known? ::tear:: Whenever I mention it to any of my anime-loving friends, I get blank looks... ;;
^_^ But it was my "first" anime... My sister made me watch it at a really young age, and I've loved it ever since~

Hm.. just wondering, but what are everyone's favorite stories from this movie?

Mine would have to be Starlight Angel~~!

~You like noisy music?
~Yes. The louder the better. Stops me from thinking.

I think it's a bit arty for a lot of traditional anime fans. I like it though. I guess my favorite would have to be the "Deprive" sequence. Lots of action there. I actually like them all, but if I had to pick one that'd be the one I like best.

> I think it's a bit arty for a lot of traditional anime fans.

Heh.. That makes me question what you mean by 'traditional...' I think what you really mean is 'anime nerds' :)

Anyway, Robot Carnival was the third anime I can recall seeing (the first being, of course, Speed Racer, and the second was either Lupin III or Macross; I'm fuzzy on the timeframe). Unlike GoGoGo or Lupin, though, this one stuck with me for years and probably was what got me interested in newer anime. I remember seeing Robot Carnival for the first time ca 1995 when they played it as part of the Saturday morning lineup for SciFi Channel (back when SciFi was worth watching). Wow, was that really ten years ago? Time flies...

reply

hehe, you're right. When I was growing up Anime Nerds liked their Japanimation with lots of cool devices and action. "Robot Carnival" was a bit of a departure, but largely because it's a kids' film (more or less).

I like it though :-)

It's one of the best pieces of anime in my collection. Heck, it's one of the best films I own.

Believe it or not, i actually remember the Saturday Anime line-up as a kid too. Along with my friend's older brother showing us bootleg recorded VHS tapes of new anime from Japan, Saturday Anime was "THE" gateway for future anime fans with features like, "Lily Cat", "Kashan - Robot Hunter", "Eight-Man After", "Tank Police", and among other things "Akira".

however, surprisingly enough, my first viewing of Robot Carnival actually happened on late night Cartoon Network. I know! its weird, but it was at a ridiculous hour, even after Toonheads and Late Night Black and White came on back in '94 or '95. I was suffering from insomnia on Friday night (yeah, apparently 5th graders get insomnia too) and came across animation that really blew me away. Since then, i have been hooked to anime since...

How i would love to relive that moment. Don't get me wrong, the internet is a GREAT thing, but now anime has sort of lost it's underground charm.

reply

Yeah, my first viewing of Robot Carnival was on Cartoon Network, also. It was when they had "A Night of Japanimation", which they showed Robot Carnival, Vampire Hunter D and Twilight of the Cockroaches consecutively. I was aware of anime prior to that, watching various anime that leaked over to the USA during the 80s on the weekend mornings(Voltron and Robotech, among others), as well as the ones played on Nickelodeon(back when Nick was GOOD) like Belle & Sebastian, Mysterious Cities of Gold, The Adventures of the Little Prince and Grimm's Fairy Tale Classics. But that night watching CN, taking in Robot Carnival, it totally made me an anime fan! It was that which inspired me to look out for similar titles(Memories and Neo Tokyo, of course) and similar types of anime. That eventually lead me to discover Miyazaki(which I love)!

The only shame would be that Robot Carnival hasn't been released on Region 1 DVD yet. It's probably one of the finest anime movies out there. It's a REAL shame that it hasn't happened yet.

You must be a girl.

Huh?

reply

This was my gateway anime. First and favorite, i unfortunetly lost my copy, and haven't seen it in a very long time. The one i remember the best and had liked the most was the girl on the roller coaster meeting the robot and giving him her necklace i think. The images of it still linger in my mind even after a decade has passed. I laugh when my friends give me that blank stare whenever i mention it, they tend to lean toward more main stream animes. Which i have nothing against, but this is a true masterpiece and will always be my favorite.

did you notice:
in starlight angel, after the girls run through the robot and he took that neclace > the scene switches. and for some moments on the right side you can see tetsuo and akira walking towards the watcher.

I love this film. My favorite segment is probably "Nightmare". That's the one with the strange machines coming out in the middle of the night.

Hollywood? You wish!!- http://www.gofishpictures.com/casshern/

It's a tie between Tale of Two robots and Presence. I liked Deprived but Presence messed with my head for a while. I cried for her at the end of that segment.

reply

Presence was without a doubt my favorite part of the movie. It had a haunting and memorable musical theme, and I enjoyed the dialogue.

Second place goes to Tale of Two Robots and Nightmare. They're tied. Their merits are many, but equal. Comedy and action/horror in spades.

Third Place is Starlight Angel. Very cute, but I don't entirely understand why the pendant, that created the problem, somehow fixed the problem.

Forth place, once again tied, goes to Cloud and Franken's Gear. Long sequences of nothing happening, followed by either a relaxing or a morbidly hilarious payoff.

Dead last comes Deprive. Lots of action, but it's very stereotypical of other action animes. I wasn't too impressed.

I'm not counting the opening/ending sequences, but if I had to, they'd be ranked similarly to Cloud and Franken's Gear. Morbid humor, and I liked the opening fanfare, and as with the whole movie the visuals are fantastic... but it's not the best in the movie.

reply

Pendant is the duality of the story. She doesn't want it anymore, but it comes back bringing someone new into her life. Like how someone doesn't want love anymore after they have been hurt, but love is what brings someone new and better into their life. Pendant always seemed to be love to me (heart shape doesn't hurt) and the story shows how it cuts both ways in both creating and slaying demons.

Presence is my favorite too.

The colonel(?) from Akira also showed up in that sequence, when the "robot" was pushing through the crowd and he turned with an annoyed look.

reply

- 1st : "A Tale of Two Robots" is very funny
- 2nd : "Presence" is very touching
- 3rd : "Franken's Gear" is mysterious ;-)
But this is almost a tie.

Saw this movie in 1995, and love it quite
as much as Katsuhiro Otomo's "Memories".

"Nothing is impossible for a genius such as I."

"Hum... I am the brilliant scientist Johan Jack Volkerson III, the world's greatest genius!"

"Peonese weapons cannot hurt us, can they, tinker bell?"

I sometimes say these lines out loud!

I have this on DVD ( Bootleg ) but it`s a reallyreallyreally good bootleg...

I want Saturday Anime back :' (

reply

This was the first Anime I ever saw. I was on the SciFi channel at least 15 years ago. really trippy, and sadly not well known and harder to find...

This is bizarre. The fact nobody mentioned "Cloud" as the all time best means you seriously didn't watch it right. Watch it again... pay closer attention to the "background"... that's where the actual story is happening. It's one of the most dramatically action-packed anim'e with tons of depth and symbolism, take another look. Seriously.

reply

For God's sake why is nobody mentioning "Clouds", that was one of the best shorts on Robot Carnival, it's got heart, it goes from destruction, to creation, to redemption. Watch it

reply

My favourite? Presence, Deprive, Starlight Angel, Cloud

Well, that's like half the movie... so I love the whole damn thing.

reply

lol I'm watching cloud right now ( I LOVE the music ) it kind o f reminds me of some stuff by Boards of Canada .

reply

If you read my post from a couple years back further up this thread, then you'll note that I mentioned "Cloud".

reply

Old thread but i dont care. My father had me watch this film when i was very young and i loved every moment of it. I just recently bought a copy on ebay and while watching it agin after all these years, it brought back great memories. My fav is definitely Cloud. Just closing my eyes and listening to the score is a great experience.
