On DVD?

Is there anyplace on this Earth where Robot Carnival can be found on DVD (or even an old VHS copy)? It was the first Anime feature film ever saw, and my library feels very empty without it.

reply

There are bootlegs floating around ebay.

Picked one up meself the other day. It's pretty damn good quality, and seems to have been mastered off a Laser disc or something.

If you ain't down with ebay, here's a link...

i got that bootleg dvd first -- the picture quality is pretty good, but the english subtitles are so bad. luckily the movie doesn't have a lot of dialogue, so it's not *too* unbearable. however, i got an official version off of amazon.co.jp, which has good subtitles and the english dub (along with the original japanese). unfortunately, it cost me about $60. it also requires a multi-region dvd player, as it's region 2. so i guess it really depends on how much you want to pay. i would probably never pay that much for a dvd again, but it is one that i felt was worth it.

reply

$60 is a bit much for me, I'm not that needy for the DVD, but it's a fricken great piece of work regardless. Instead of buying a multi-region coded DVD player your better off checking if the one you have is hackable

are you talking to me or do you just like my reply button?

reply

Don't buy bootlegs.

A DVD's been out for a number of years now. I have a special edition with a booklet that has the artists of each of the pieces discussing their work. I can't remember how much I paid for it (~$30).

The downshot is that it's only available in Europe and Japan. If you live in the States or Canada you should be able to pick up a copy. The downshot being that it's a Region 2 disk.

Fair warning; for those of you advocating bootlegs your messages are part of a pool of evidence for people selling illegal copies. Odds are nothing'll happen to you, but you should know that you can be tracked, and your name on any receipt (as well address, phone #, etc.) is part of that pool. You've been warned.

reply

Stop with the FUD Blueghos. Nothing is going to happen to them. Nothing.

reply

there's a region free disc out there (and I don't think it's a bootleg). I got it for about $10 on eBay a while ago. Damn good picture quality

reply

It's a region 2 release only, and it's priced pretty high. Your's is a bootleg. The VHS release is another story.

reply

I don't know what "FUD" is or means, but if you think nothing ever happens, then you're living in a dream world. Typically the folks busted are those who've been selling pirated versions for a long time, and have been tracked via customer purchases. Myself I've gotten gyped with some pirated copies, but rest assured those who sold them (and even portions of the customer base, unless you fessed up, like myself via a complaint), are subject to prosecution. The law on the books relates to purchasing "stolen" goods (in this case stolen intellectual property). Take it for what it's worth. But don't take my word for it. Go look it up yourself. Or find out the hard way.

the korean region 3 release is available for around $25. it seems to be a carbon copy of the japanese special edition release. try yesasia.com

reply

Pirates are the meat in our beefaroni.
FUD is just FOOD mispelled.

reply

Look, I could be walking into a trap right now, but FUD stands for "Fear Uncertainty Doubt."

This reply maybe a bit late but I got a great copy for around $10 from a vendor on froogle. Just type it in its the first result to come up.

reply

Been on DVD in Japan for a while. If you can play region 2 it's easy to find here. You can get it in Japanese or English too.

reply

There is a Korean regionless DVD out there with English/Chinese (selectable) subtitles. Buy it if you don't really care for the "Presence" segment as much as the others, or like me you are just desparate. "Presence" really seems to have been done in English originally for an OVA release as presented in the Streamline/Orion release here in the US. I don't speak Japanese, but the voices (I do know what Japanese-voiced anime should sound like) and horrid subtitles completely destroy the narrative of the work I originally experienced and scream of shoddy after-market translation. The regionless Korean DVD is like and exercise in translation faux pas to the point where I don't even bother with the subtitles and just explain to people plot development and dialogue as I remember them. Other than that it is a fine transfer with good audio fidelity and a copy of the trailer for less than most DVDs at retail. Hopefully, the HD migrations will bring about a new transfer and US release of a film that was the first compelling anime many Americans ever saw.

reply

I'm still waiting on an official R1 version.

What the hell man, all the other animes are on DVD, why can't they just release this one too?

I've heard great things about Robot Carnival but can't *beep* watch it, because it's not on DVD!!!

And screw bootlegs, I don't trust them.

Hopefully it's only a matter of time before someone gets this out officially on DVD, Otomo is the bomb.

reply

From what I've read, a R1 release is unlikely due to licensing issues. Pick up the Japanese R2 release (make a friend in Japan or with Japanese contacts); it's very good. The R2 release has English and Japanese audio as well as English and Korean subtitles. Don't buy bootlegs, especially for rare stuff like this that IS actually available legitimately (a lot of obscure stuff is really impossible to find outside the realm of bootlegs). You're only helping unscrupulous people profit off other peoples' hard work.

Just to reiterate, the ONLY legitimate DVD version of this is the Japanese R2 release. If you find an all-coded release, it's a bootleg. For that matter, if you find an all-coded release of ANYTHING produced by a movie studio it's a bootleg.

reply

For the ethics-devoid, you can download a torrent of it, and watch the entire thing. Not that I advocate it, I admire not watching it in protest. I was lucky enough to watch it on the Sci-Fi Channel in the mid-90's. They did an awesome job programming, they only put commercials in during the act breaks.

There's a korean dvd floating around on ebay every now and then. It has the Streamline dub as well as the original japanese language track. I picked one up about a year ago and I love it. Good luck with your search!

reply

Best way to squash piracy. Release the damn DVD already. Christ.

reply

Exactly ( and for a reasonable price ) anime is way to damn expensive ( I'am starting to see a change though )

reply

I too try very hard never to steal from what I consider a 'fellow artist' but as you stated, this is the true problem for me too. I don't use even a DVD player anymore but at least OFFER something in digital form that doesn't even cost packaging!!
