Why would the vampires allow a church, a supposed holy sanctuary, that they can not enter, to still be standing in the town of Salem's Lot?

How many times do they have to be chasing some normy around town only to lose them in the church before they would fix that? You'd think there'd be some kinda weekly vampire council meeting and that it would have come up by now...

They kept the church up to avoid rumors of the town being taken over by vampires. They wanted it to still look like a "normal" town, so that no outsiders would suspect anything.

Also they explain the myths aren't true and can enter churches. Like they can eat garlic, have children and don't need human blood
