How did this movie happen?

Did the studio start off wanting a sequel to an old mini-series that had been made eight years prior? Did Larry Cohen have a completely original story he was trying to get made, but was forced by the studio to call it Salem's Lot? Or did Larry Cohen simply have no respect for the original and wrote something completely different on purpose because he didn't care? I just don't understand how this ended up with the Salem's Lot brand on it.

I am not a fan. I just happen to enjoy movies. Fans are embarrassing.

I don't know, but I've always liked this one.

I think this story was from an unpublished book from Stephen King
