Julie Kavner

I thought Julie Kavner had the best role of her career in this film as Seth Green's mother. Warm and funny, Kavner created one of the most likeable moms I have ever seen in a film and should have received a Best Supporting Actress nomination for her work here. Anyone agree?

Yes, she was great.

reply

Yes, she definitely is the best part of this most underrated Woody Allen film.

But I also liked her in This Is My Life, Nora Ephron's (talk about underrated) directorial debut, in which Julie FINALLY got to play a leading role!

Julie Kavner was perfect as the mom. but the whole cast was great. just very well cast from beginning to end.

reply

Yes, this would not have been the same without the cast it had. Of course, I've seen it about a dozen times and could not imagine anyone else in those roles, but they were SO well written, and played with just the right amount of "stereotypical lower-middle-class NY Jew" that they are fleshed out characters, yet always seem asa natural as if we are watching a documentary.

Julie Kavner is indeed the heart of this picture, and I think it really put her on the map. Both of the other sisters were exactly right, too, as was cousin Ruthie and her party-line snooping.

Yes. This is in my top 3 of Woody Allen movies. I watch it every time I see it on the TV schedule.

reply

She was also in New York Stories where she played a fortune-teller.

reply

She is also in Hannah and her Sisters as one of Woody's co-workers (his assistant, I think).

Can you say - it's only a movie?? Your world view is very narrow. And have ou thought about therapy to curb those violent tendencies??
George... don't do that!

While now it's almost impossible for me to hear her voice and not think of Marge Simpson, but yeah, she was really good in this.

This Is My Life is a terrific movie, very much like Woody Allen. And it still isn't available on DVD.

reply

She has a kind of maternal sweetness about her. I think her best role was in the film Awakenings. I loved her.

reply

She was perfect. Woody probably didn't have to do much in terms of direction just let her go.
