Opening scene is hard to beat

The two robbers scrambling to find the radio in the darkened home is hilarious.

yes.. and how the cheer when "they" have just won.. and why do they answer the phone in the first place?? ok.. so they are not that smart

reply

They didn't want to let anyone pick up the phone - it was making too much noise.

reply

And then they probably didn't want the person on the other end to be suspicious, so they just play along. Look where it put them! I agree, it's funny.

Why, do you normally phone the police when you hear a neighbours phone ringing?

"We're making a film here, not a movie."

reply

if anyone else was in the house, they would have gone to pick up the phone - thus exposing the burglars.

reply

But surely them answering the questions, then celebrating, was louder than the phone ringing.

"We're making a film here, not a movie."

reply

Yeah, I don't think it was to quiet the phone so much as just because of habit--a phone rings, you answer it before you think what you're doing. At least with them.

I mean, you could also quibble with why Joe's dad would stop and pick up Joe in the cab (when he apparently knew Joe was taking the radio to be fixed) and yet still be trying to hide his job from Joe. Or why did the Mafia guy's mother insist SO strongly on his getting her into radio? It's a movie composed mostly of vignettes that are very skilfully entertwined for the most part and you should not question every little loose end.

I love that scene...it just cracks me up the way the two robbers completely forget that they are robbing someone's house and get totally involved in winning that radio contest. Too funny!!
