I love this line. I imitated it so often that my husband would start laughing when I just said the word "Hark".

Buddy Hackett did a routine based on, "Hark, I think I hear the cannons roar." If I remember correctly, it's about an actor, who has one line in a play." He practices it over and over, and when he's finally onstage for the first time, waiting for his cue, there's a terrific sound blast from offstage. So instead of the line, he shouts, "What the *&%# was THAT???"

While Julie Kavner and Dianne Wiest gave the best performances, this scene for me is one of the funniest. It sounds like she's saying, "Hwak", and later after her elocution lessons when she asks in her old voice, "Has anyone every been on the roof of this place?" and Wallace Shawn gives her that strange look, I lost it again.

"Great theater makes you smile. Outstanding theater may make you weep."
