The shoulder-holstered Bowie knife

As I recall, Mr. Elliott wore the same rig (with maybe the same knife) in an earlier L'Amour adaptation, THE SACKETTS. Anyone know if this was something actually done in the Old West? Maybe it's something the costume designer or armorer for THE SACKETTS came up with and Elliott just held on to it.
