Was anyone startled by all the blackface?

I couldn't take her mom or uncle seriously because of their blackface act. It looked tongue in cheek at best and laughable at worst. Especially when they're joined by their "mother" who's also not played by an actual Indian woman but more or less passes for one. Then again Mia herself is as white as white girls get, and yet she's great and pretty convincing (just like the girl who plays her younger self), so I don't know, maybe there was a better way to handle the parents... Where's Ben Kingsley when you need him?
