DVD Release - March 2005

I just checked the director's website for Psychos In Love (http://www.gormanbechard.com/films/psychos.htm) and he's heard from the German distributor that it's a definite for March 2005. Of course it was supposed to come out in June 2003, but various delays have caused it to not come out on time.

I don't think it's going to get an American release, but there were some copies sold on eBay pre-release... well, very pre-release. Better late than never, though!

Yes, nearly two solid years after I won the auction on eBay, I finally got my copy of Psychos in Love on DVD. Two years... one DVD. Was it worth the wait. LORDY YES!!!

Ok, the movie is just stupid. The acting is terrible. There is no plot. The music is... well, pure garbage. The effects... actually aren't too bad. If you're looking for a quality film, please look elsewhere. If you're looking for a totally cheesy, stupid, fun, quotable film that'll be something to laugh at, this is your trip. This is established... it's cheap thrills.

But now the DVD: the movie has been out of print on VHS for probably 15 years and pretty much always looked like crap. Go figure that it looks almost as bad on DVD with a few exceptions. All in all, the transfer is pretty clean. There are a few missing frames in the film that I remember being on the VHS edition, so it looks like the prints were damaged. Of course I could be wrong... the movie may have been edited to video and the original source may have been damaged, but there are scratches at the beginning of the film that make me think it was done on film.

Original damage aside, the transfer is DARK. The blacks are realllly deep to the point of obscuring details and the whites could stand to be pushed up slightly without flaring. I know it's a low budget movie shot on 16mm at best, but I think they could have done a little bit more to make the picture a little brighter. If the trade off was losing the clarity of the transfer, though, I'll take it. Once you get past the scratches and the gunk, the picture really looks pretty damned good for the original source. The sound... about the same as it's always been. You can pretty much hear everything without struggling... unless you count the music. You're really not missing anything there.

The reality of it, though, is that there are only going to be 300 copies of this floating around in the USA with no plans for it to be officially released here. This DVD is only being released in Germany and the director did a barter deal for copies in lieu of payment. I ordered my copy when I first heard about it, put up with two years of delay, and am just completely happy to have what I got. It's a fan's release and that's all I really care about. If you can get a copy and you're a fan, it's worth it.

Thanks, Gorman. Glad you finally got this out on DVD!

Got mine as well. Once again, a long wait from purchase to arrival, but so worth the wait. #100/300 and very thrilled with that as well.

since the german DVD is only 83 minutes and the actual movie is listed on IMDB to be 88 minutes long, I`m kinda wondering if this one is cut... is it?

We're talking about the "Trash Collection Volume 3" - DVD, right?

reply

I just rented the original Wizard Video VHS version and my counter read roughly 86.5 minutes, though the box and cassette both say 88 mins. I wonder how we could compare to see what's been cut.

BTW, the same grade-Z production team also made the comedy Galactic Gigolo with pretty much the same cast.

Actually, you'll find 3 version of the film on the DVD...the video release, which is actually SHORTER than my cut, which is also on the DVD, and the first rough cut as well...
