The score is awful!!!

Throughout the ENTIRE film we get a blaring synthesizer playing the same melody over and over and over again! This film would've been better if they actually had an orchestral score helping to tell the story. Otherwise this film went down a few pints in my book because of the awful score!

reply

Right - Knopfler is known for his annoying blaring synths.

I always thought of it as part of the joke and cheese of the movie, yeah it's not good, but it's a goofy movie so it works.

I watched this movie for the first time today. It was good but not great. I feel like the high rating is from 10/10 nostalgia votes. I gave it an 8. Definitely worth the watch but I doubt I will watch it again. And yes, I too thought the score was not good. It became annoyingly repetitive at times and took me out of the story. I do understand that this film was probably great when it first came out, but the humor is a little dated. It might be considered a classic today, but once the generation that loved it has passed it will be forgotten.

reply

Eh, I disagree. Last year I watched the film with a few younger kids, 5-12. They loved it so much their dad (who caught a few snippets) went out and bought it the next day. They were quoting it for weeks. Even now, almost a year later, if you quote it or bring it up they'll laugh and quote it themselves. It's not for everyone, but for those that like it it's timeless. There will always be those that love its sense of humor, young and old.

The movie is great. The music feels like as low budget as amovie can get. After 200 viewings the score becomes part of the charm though.

Mark Knopfler is an excellent guitarist. If he had gone solo with period pieces it would have been a lot better.

You lost any credibility with your ridiculous opinion. The score is brilliant and fits perfectly. You're a troll who has to piss on beloved movies and scores. I hope you die and someone plays the score at your funeral

reply

Agreed. Wonderful movie, but the score is unworthy of its greatness.

reply

100% agree.

It sounds like someone loaned Knopfler a Fairlight or a Syclavier for the weekend and this was the best he could trot out.

I'm not really given to exaggeration, but this really is one of the worst scores for a fine movie I have EVER heard.

And Sultans of Swing is near to my favourite all-time song!
