I love Gary Oldman but...

***spoiler ahead***

I thought Alfred Molina was so excellent in this movie. He was so so so good-he was so funny but in such a sad way. Everybody was excellent, and not to take away from the leads, but my favorite character was the mother. "This is my husband. Ignore him." is now my favorite line of all time from any movie, ever.

I don't know where this movie was hiding all this time. I'd never even heard of it before. I guess it might have been ahead of its time--way ahead of its time.

I found this movie on Youtube yesterday, and I have to agree with you...Alfred was excellent in this movie.

For some reason I just wanted to hug him in certain scenes, and laugh and say "you sound like a mom!" in other scenes.

I found him very sympathetic, until the end...was it just me, or did the scriptwriter mean to make that little speech he said before the murder kinda funny?

Example: "You even sleep better than me!"...and then WHAM!
Was I the only one who found that kinda funny?

Alfred Molina's a great actor, and I'm glad he's gone on to bigger things.

Gary too! :D

Now, I just have to say I LOVE Gary Oldman.
To the ends of the EARTH!!! No one can totally out act him in ANYTHING and he always steals the show away from other actors, even in supporting roles or as minor characters.

But I totally have to agree with you.
Gary was good, but Alfred played a much more complexed character anyways.
I thought it was stupid how Gary Oldman, out of all his movies, he get's nominated for a BAFTA for this role when I didn't think he was the best one. Alfred totally deserved that nomination, and win and it's a shame he didn't.

It was probably one of my favorite performances I have ever seen, and I loved at the end also with his, "I'm a homosexual...I lost both my parents...I'm going bald, etc."

It was so powerful and moving and he showed so much emotion though it.
I totally rank his acting in the movie up there with anyone who's ever won an Oscar. Seriously.....

I can't second you here, knox.

We are always complaining that Gary is not recognized, he is ignored by the Academy, and he deserves every prize in the world.

I know Molina was great (as he usually is), but GO was outstanding, he always get totally inmerse in the characters he plays, it wasn't easy to perform this role, not every actor could play Joe Orton as he did.

Both characters were very difficult to perform, both were great, but I think Gary really deserves the nomination he got.

No Amanda, not just you.

I've just watched this movie this evening, and at that line I first started to laugh, and then realised what I was laughing at -- his total loss with reality and plunge into complete paranoia -- and stopped laughing in dismay, and then -- THWACK. And I was gobsmacked.

All those emotions at once, all on top of each other. Alan Bennett really is a remarkable writer.

You might very well think that. I couldn't possibly comment.

I think Molina is the highlight of the cast. Wish Redgrave had been in it more, because she was wonderful too.
