We're we initially not supposed to like Del at first?

I do noticed that this movie wants you to think Del is a very annoying guy who is supposed to get on your nerves, my initial impression of Del was I thought he was this annoying guy who you can care less about because you're rooting for Neal.

I thought the scene where Neal goes off on Del was the turning point of the film where I realized Del is a nice, well meaning guy.

I don't think so. We were just supposed to see that he was driving Neal insane. I think we're supposed to see Del as an okay guy from the get-go. For example, when Neal first recognizes Del as the one who took his cab, Del offers to buy him something as a peace offering. When they get stranded in Wichita Del has already made other plans to help Neal out. I think we're supposed to see that in his mind he means well, but on the outside he's clueless that he's driving people nuts.

It's redundant to use 'initially' AND 'at first' - they mean the same thing.

No, we were supposed to think he was obnoxious but at the same time an all around nice guy.

Del is an allegory that describes what Thanksgiving is like for most American's. We get a few days off from work or school to go see our obnoxious, silly family members. When we first meet up with said family members we're annoyed at the way they behave and as the holiday day(s) go by we go through many ups and downs(tv too loud, irritating eating sounds, awkward behavior/jokes)until we part and realize the time spent was a lot more fun than going back to work/school.

Yes, your family is Del Griffith!

THEY SURE ARE.
