Will Smith and Kevin Hart will star in and produce a remake of the 1987 road comedy “Planes, Trains & Automobiles” for Paramount Pictures.

The original “Planes, Trains & Automobiles” was directed by John Hughes, and starred Steve Martin and the late John Candy as a pair of mismatched businessmen trying to get home to Chicago for Thanksgiving in the face of a variety of travel disasters.

The remake will be a modern update of the original, with Smith and Hart playing characters who are forced to team up to tackle travel obstacles to get home to their loved ones.

Hart’s HartBeat Productions and Smith’s Westbrook Studios are developing the remake. Aeysha Carr (“Brooklyn 99”) is set to pen the screenplay, marking her feature writing debut. Hart and Smith will produce the film alongside Westbrook Studios co-president and head of motion pictures Jon Mone and HartBeat’s president of film and television Bryan Smiley.

Smith was most recently seen in “Bad Boys for Life.” He’s been in production as the star of “King Richard,” portraying the father of tennis stars Venus and Serena Williams. Hart was last seen in “Jumanji: The Next Level” and has completed production of the drama “Fatherhood,” which Sony will release in April 2021.

Carr most recently executive produced the upcoming Hulu series “Woke,” starring Lamorne Morris and Sasheer Zamata, set to air in September. Her recent writing credits include episodes for a number of sitcoms, including the series “Brooklyn 99,” for which she also served as a supervising producer.

Carr is represented by ICM Partners, 3 Arts Entertainment and Goodman, Genow, Schenkman, Smelkinson & Christopher. Hart is represented by UTA, 3 Arts Entertainment and Schreck Rose Dapello Adams Berlin & Dunham. Smith is represented by CAA. The news was first reported by Deadline Hollywood.

Something's should never be remade it's perfect.

reply

I agree. Leave this alone and come up with something original for this duo.

reply

Well it could have been worse... they could have decided the needed an all female remake.

reply

Amen.

reply

waste of time and effort and money , you cant remake masterpieces

reply

This wont be popular but...
I reckon it could be alright - theres a lot you could do with the road trip formula, new jokes , new situations , updated for 21st c...

but if its one of those word-for-word remakes (like Heat) then yeah - waste of time

reply

Yup, I think Will Smith and Kevin Hart could be good in a buddy movie together. The formula's good. It's been over thirty years. Yeah, I say go for it.

Now, I do agree that it's an uphill battle since the original is REALLY good and if they don't bring the heat, the remake is going to be very unfavourably compared to it.

What's wrong with Heat? It's a near-perfect movie, remake or not. The Maltese Falcon is a remake, too, but it whips the pants off of the original. Heat's awesome.

reply

Heat is good yeah, the script is almost word for word the same as its predecessor , but the acting , cinamatograophy , special effects , music etc etc make it a much more polished "clone" of the original

Planes trains doesent need that, so a remake would need to be same idea , diversified script, new situations etc

reply

Yes, they should change the script. They'd have to, I would think, in this era of ubers and things.

reply

That's fine if you want to rip off the formula, but at least call it something different.

reply

Then you'd be whinging its a ripoff surely?
The general "Plot" would be the same , therefore a remake needs the same title
just the words , locations and some of the situations would be different.

reply

I think both those actors could be good in a remake but the original Planes, Trains, and Automobiles really is perfect and should not be re-made. As discussed on another thread here, we could use more Thanksgiving movies so if they want to make a different one, that would be fine.

reply

My question why is this being allowed to happen? Does Paramount own all rights to the movie? Does the family of John Hughes have any say in this?

reply

John Hughes has definitely gotta be rolling in his grave over this nonsense!!

reply

I mean they could rip off the plot and call it something else. It won't piss off as many people that way.

reply

In fairness, Planes, Trains & Automobiles was "remade" once before with Due Date.

Same with Tommy Boy and Dutch.

reply

I've never seen Dutch, so I can't answer to that. However... Tommy Boy? Why? A mismatched pair traveling is hardly enough to call it a ripoff. Due Date, absolutely. Not Tommy Boy.

reply

True Story - The writer and director had to watch Planes, Trains, and Automobiles during shooting to figure out what to do next.

reply

Tommy Boy and Dutch are completely different stories.

I'd guess Hart will play the everyman and Smith the straight uptight upper middle class man.

But your right, it could be the reverse.

I wonder how good the original would be if Candy and Martin switched roles.

reply

Disgusting. Absolutely disgusting.

The two pillows scene will be interesting in 2021.
