Anyone think this movie would have had a sequel?

If John hadn't passed, I think there would have been a sequel, for sure. And if not, there should have been. It could have taken place just a month later during Christmas time, where Neal has to travel again, due to the job, and agrees to have Del along. It could even have had a happier ending, with Del meeting someone special.

Another road trip wouldn't have worked out too well as the previous commenter said. Maybe a sequel with a different name, whatever that may be. Instead of them on the road, it would be with Neal and his family adjusting to Del being around the house.

John Hughes made that movie; it's called "Uncle Buck."

No, it works better if it stands alone. Many films have no need for a sequel.

Home Alone and Vacation got quality sequels, and they were meant to be stand alone films.

In the sequel, Neal and Del could have gotten stranded in the southwest or pacific northwest. They could have met another stranger who is not who they appear to be. Hijinks ensue!

I don't think so

From the time of its release to Candy's death almost a 7 year gap and nobody involved ever talked about a possible sequel. Hughes never seemed to be a big fan of sequels.I don't count because he had very little to do with vacation or Home Alone series.

I think Steve and John both thought so highly of this movie, they probably wouldn't have agreed to one. But, like Seven Samurai, it's a story line that begs to be reused. They did to a degree in Tommy Boy.

It should take place the day of Thanksgiving, where Del spends the night. The first 30 minutes could just be how annoying Del gets during the occasion, and then the mood changes once Neal gets curious and looks inside the trunk and finds Del's wife. Then the rest of film turns into a thriller as Neal tries to get his family to safety while Del stalks them and eventually tries to explain it was just a misunderstanding and he can't afford to bury her. Neal forgives him, but Del hacks him to pieces anyway.

The dynamics of the characters would be different, but I think its possible that they could have gotten a good sequel out of them.
