Not much of a capenter/many plot holes

So if they had just moved into that lovely house, how was he friends with Billy since high school and why were the kids new to the school..Where did they come from? And if he was such a good carpenter/contractor, why did he move into such a lousy looking house and why didn't he fix it up a little bit, or at least fix the roof from leaking..I know there's a lot of plot holes, but it was a funny movie..

To be fair, just because he just moved to that town doesn't mean he couldn't have been friends with Billy.

Dean & his family easily could have just lived in a different town. Dean never says "We just moved to this STATE." He says we just moved 'here'.

I wondered too why he didn't fix up the house. But watching his parenting style & what he did when he wasn't working (he drank beer & TV and not much else), it seems more like he was lazy and did not care.

I'd say this cloud is Cumulo Nimbus.
Didn't he discover America?
Penfold, shush.

reply

Exactly, he was just lazy and besides it's not like the kids were complaining.

Uh...I wouldn't say he was Lazy...he was working two jobs to pay the bills...

I agree. and in the Bronx where I work, many people move from one area in the town to another and are still within walking distance to their school.

and that house really did have a lot of potential to be very nice. all it needed was someone [or two, or the entire family] to spruce up the place and put things away. then you can get into building stuff and painting.

that looked like a really good bonding project that the family could have done.

you also need money.

OH THANK YOU GOD! THANK YOU SO BLOODY MUCH!!! Basil Fawlty

i'm still confused why the kids & dad thought it was funny to get sprayed down with hose. i would have probably called the police.

We moved here? Deliberately?

The last place was a real dump!

So maybe he didn't think there was anything wrong with the house. Besides, those kids would have just trashed the place anyway. And they could have lived in another town, and moved to Elk Grove because his old high school buddy had work for him.

reply

My husband is a handyman, but like many, he neglects our dump because he is too busy doing jobs for others! I know other "handymen" who do this same thing.

reply

My father was the same way, I remember my mother always complaining that he would fix a million things for other people, but she couldn't even get him to fix a leaky faucet lol

reply

It's the same with mechanics the little annoying problems that need to be fixed are put off to work on the cars of everybody else.

How many people want to come home from their jobs and do the same thing at home?

Part of the movie's underlying premise is that Dean's a slacker and needs direction in life. When Annie inspires him with her vision of the mini-golf course, we start to see him make changes ... night shifts etc.🐭

reply

Dean had the skill, but probably was unable to afford the materials to fix the house up. Roofing and lumber material are not cheap.

reply

Well there is always the saying that Auto mechanics never get around to fixing their own cars/vehicles and it could be the same with carpenters.

reply

Wow. Shut up.

"Why couldn't the monkey arrange this from INSIDE the garbage can?"
