They remade this in 2011

I was shocked to see a remake of this movie, directed by Shawn Levy and starring Hugh Jackman Evangeline Lilly with Dakota Goya as the kid. . . . oh yeah, instead of arm wrestling, they fight with Robots in a Robot Combat League (similar to what you might see on the SyFy channel except add about 50 years of technology.

Don't get me wrong, I really enjoyed "Real Steel" (aka "Over the Top 2"). But if I'm being honest, would you rather watch CGI robots fight (yawn) or Sly Stallone arm wrestle a guy so much bigger, you can see Sly taking IV steroids just to get through pre-production? Give me Over the Top any day and twice on Sunday

Real Steel is nothing like Over the Top. The only thing the movies have in common is that there's an estranged father and son in each.

It reminded me of Real Steel, but Real Steel is much better.

OK, a friendly question: what are you smoking and can I have some too?

Because I thought Over the Top was similar or that I like Real Steel? Real Steel has a rating of 7.1 on IMdb, so there's not much of a case you can make there.

I'm sorry. I don't speak Gayanese.

What has the rating got to do with it? All that means is a bunch of bozos who like the movie voted it up. The only way imdb ratings can be interpreted even slightly is if you take them as a popularity poll.

Yes, I get the surface similarity; a father-and-son growth story through some form of competition. It's the part of liking the horrible CGI-generated crap fest that I don't understand.

Not that I'm judging you or anything, opinions and all. But to me it symbolies pretty much everything that sucks these days. As do about 99% of Hollywood films in general, though.

"Real Steel" was awesome but seriously beside the father/son relationship it was completely different. Jackman character in "Real Steel" was a bit of a selfish guy at the start of the film , nothing like the character Stalonne play in "Over the top"

Real Steel is the visual equivalent of wiping dog turd off your shoe

I was actually thinking the same thing as the OP. And Real Steel is in fact VERY similar to Over the Top. At least as far as the plot goes, because all core elements are the same: a flawed father who didn't want to take responsibilty for his son in the first place, is finally brought together with him only to find a spoiled boy. The son refuses his dad at first, but eventually his father grows on him through his iron will to set things right and a sporting competition he grew fond of.

That you can't deny. That's like if someone gave you the synopsis "This movie is about a rebellion of oppressed people against a fierce regime which, with the help of a defecting royalty, finds plans to exploit a critical weakness in the regime's defense to bring it down for good" and you said "This has absolutely NOTHING to do with Star Wars - A new Hope". Come on.

A movie having similarities to another 20 years before, does not make it a remake.

They remade this in 2011

Actually the correct statement would be:

"They poorly remade this in 2011 as a children's movie" 😀

Seriously, "Real Steel" was just dumb. Cheesy CGI, the most annoying (and equally genius) kid in the world, a boring Hugh Jackman, a useless Evangeline Lily and the most stereotypical villains EVER!!!

"I'm the dude, playing a dude that's disguised as another dude".
