I am a saami. I can speak the north-saami language wich is used in this movie (I speak to my parents in saami). I can tell you that saami is nothing like norwegian. Norwegian is in the same family as english and german. Saami is more like finnish.

reply

Correct. Comparing Saami and Norwegian is like comparing Italian and Dutch. Not related at all.

Good thing most of you guys also speak a bit of Norwegian, else we wouldn't be communicating much :)

Isn't Saami a Finno-Ugric language, and not part of the Indo-European language family (to which Dutch and Italian belong)? In which case comparing Saami to Norwegian might be like comparing Dutch (Indo-European) to Magyar (Finno-Ugric).

reply

Correct. The saami language is closely related to finnish and sounds very much like finnish. Norwegians that doesn't have a clue about the saami language
can protest and say that saami has similarities to norwegian. That is true
but the norwegianlike words in saami is a result of the cruel norwegianisation of the saami people.

Thank you for the information, Saaivu.

The film Ofelas surely has and will continue to contribute to restoring Saami identity and culture. I hope more such beautiful films can be made. And I really hope I will have the good fortune to watch them (with English subtitles).
Films of the calibre of Ofelas are seriously lacking, and more of the kind are most welcome in my DVD cupboard.

Lovely sig, by the way.

I've also got the Kinowelt release from Germany. Although I always watch the movie in the beautiful Saami language, the English subs seem to be dubtitles of the English track. (I checked to see if that would be the case.)

It doesn't bother me too much though, as the overall meaning seems to have been preserved. I'm actually grateful for any English subs here, because they allow me to listen to the original language.
In addition, the English and German audiotracks seem to be close enough to each other in this case. That's encouraging too, because the German dubs I've known have been more accurate than many English ones. It makes me hopeful that I'm not missing out on too much of the intricacies of the dialogue.
In any case, it remains one of the most treasured discs in my collection.

The movie itself is in my top ten. I watch it at least twice a year. Everything about the film is excellent. The interesting faces (I find everyone quite beautiful, from the little ones to the older members), voices, the settings, the spirituality and sense of community. The plot is also very strong and like a prototypical myth, although based on a true story.

How could I forget? The wisdom that Raste imparts the young hero is quite profound and one worth being reminded of. And the white reindeer are wonderful. The film's just an awesome experience all round.

The DVD is now released in a 2-disc version here in Norway.
They have remastered both picture and sound, but sadly the current release does not have english subtitles.
BUT, the rumor is that SF (the distributor) are indeed working on a release for the international market with, amongst others, english subtitles :)

I saw this movie about5+ years ago here in the US on a pay TV channel and would very much like to acquire it. Can someone suggest how, please?

I saw this movie in the United States when it was in its original theatrical run - it had English sub-titles.

Has anyone heard whether a U.S. region compatible DVD has ever been done that includes English sub-titles?

I've thought of this movie off and on over the years and have often wished I could see it again.

For anyone wondering, I just watched the new remastered edition Pidax Film PAL release of this great film and the picture quality is outstanding. Audio is excellent. Has Sami,English,German and Spanish audio options with English,German,Spanish and Portuguese subtitles. In my opinion the only way to see this is with the native Sami audio combined with subs of your choice, of course I used English subs. Great release by Pidax.
