Great underestimated movie!

I think Nuts is a great movie, which should have gotten a couple of oscar(nomination)s!!
Barbra Streisand is simply great in this movie about a high class prostitute who accidetally kills one of her clients, just to protect herself!
I really don't understand why this movie wasn't a huge hit!!

Hi. I saw nuts when I was eight or nine or ten. It was my first impression of Barbra Streisand and at first I thought she was repulsive. I loved the movie right away, and I was playing call girl in my bedroom for days (sort of a make believe thing). Anyways, when I saw the movie again later when i was 13, I fell in love with Babs and thought she was beautiful. I am a hard core fan now.

"I have to put on a show for who now? Aaron Levinsky...legal aide."

If you think this is a great movie then you are NUTS! So Barbra gets $200 for a hand job, $300 for a blow job, and $500 for a straight lay. Who does she think she is? Denise Richards? Elisha Cuthbert? Scarlett Johanssen? Jessica Biel? The old bag was already well into her forties when she made this stupid movie. I still crack up when I think of her delivering those lines - and with a straight face no less!

In 1987 any one of the women you mention were either in grade school or their mother's wombs. I think Babs was very sexy in the movie. And I just don't think that being a high price call girl in the film is all about sex appeal as much as it is manipulating men and acting sexy. I thought the funniest part of the movie was Leslie Nielson in a speedo. Barbra was totally hot.

Don't cross-examine me in the rain. I'll be there. Wet. But I'll be there. Glenda Jackson, A Touch of Class.

and also in speedos. NUTs just happened to be on today on HBO, and I have watched it many times in the past. I always enjoyed the scene when he went beserk on her, and how the back ground music tends to get faster and faster, with the scene till she kills him lol

Anyways, awesome music, and babs is one sexy older woman (not bad for plastic surgery..eh?), and kudos to her~

Hey wrh-4,

I can't help but feel a little sorry for you. A young person makes sex with their body, but an older person makes love with their mind. You must be very young.

When Claudia says, "I am talking about taking your body to heaven and sending your mind south. I'm talking about spoiling you so bad you'll hate every other woman you touch. I'm talking about my mouth on your mouth, and my tongue anywhere you want it. I'm talking about indulging your every fantasy, and then giving you those fantasies one by one. Just for you. All for you. Nobody but you." I damn near swooned.

Perhaps some day you may be fortunate enough to experience that kind of attention. Will you be ready for it?

I accidentally discovered this movie in a video store one day...I had never heard of it but I love Streisand, so I had to give it a look. This movie absolutely blew me away. No question, this was the best performance of Streisand's career in a fascinating and jaundiced look at the justice system with intense direction (Martin Ritt is credited as director, but I can see Barbra's hand all over this), and a superior screenplay that asks as many questions as it answers. Just an amazing movie that I have now watched about a dozen times.

reply

I don't either. This film was riveting from start to finish and Streisand gave the performance of her career.

Streisand was definitely robbed of an Oscar nomination for this one. But Hollywood has always had a love-hate-hate relationship with Streisand...they seem to resent her for some reason and have never really given her the credit she is due...never recognized the true scope of her artistry and the broad range of her talents. Look what happened when she made THE PRINCE OF TIDES...the academy nominated the film for seven Oscars, including Best Picture, but did not nominate her for Best Director...what, did the film direct itself?

You're so right Isaac5855, I couldn't say it any better!

Well moreso that the main character was a whore and in the end a victor of the system rather than victim.

The movie was completely overlooked by the Oscars because Streisand tried to turn it into a star vehicle for herself. The film simply crumbled underneath the weight of it all. She is terribly miscast and completely unbelievable in the role. It should have been Cher or even Winger, either of whom would have been excellent in the part. Streisand is not believable as a high-priced, sought-after hooker. She might have been able to pull it off, possibly, in the seventies, when she passed on 'Klute', but by the time Nuts was made, she was too old. It's a great shame that since she made so few movies in the eighties that she spent so much time and effort on Nuts instead of giving us something in which she might have excelled.

I could name a few reasons why Nuts wasn't a huge hit.

For one thing, anyone that would burst out in a courtroom like that would get thrown out. It just wasn't a "realistic" potrayal of courtroom drama. And after all is said and done, this is a courtroom drama film and it seriously lacks in this department. Everytime the plot thickens, we get an outburst from Barbara. It just didn't quite work.

Another thing, I think Dreyfuss was miscast in this film. There just wasn't any chemistry between the main characters. They should have gotten someone else to play Aaron Levinsky.

But I definitely agree that Barbara's performance was actually really good, even though it was annoying at times, it was very good. But it just wasn't enough to save this film but i'd still give it a fairly high rating. Probably a 7 out of 10 and I would recommend it to someone thats looking for something a little different.
