It took years for me to notice, but Farrell (Costner) was subtly signaling Nina (Iman's character) throughout the encounter.
At the same moment Pritchard was really laying into her with threats and intimidation, Nina could clearly see Farrell preparing the vase behind Pritchard's back.
Originally, I agreed with nutmustardxx (4 years ago): Farrell was preparing to bash Pritchard over the head the instant Nina ratted him out.
I still do agree that's what was happening, but I now ALSO believe he was letting Nina know that was his next move. Basically saying, "keep your mouth shut, or I'll have to kill this guy right in your own apartment."
It was manipulation as well as preparation.
Last minor point: I think people find this scene confusing because of the way Farrell was holding the vase. He was holding its neck with his thumb uppermost, NOT the proper handhold to use the vase as a clubbing weapon. So the audience naturally wonders what he's doing, because he's holding it weirdly.
At that angle, however, Nina wouldn't see how he's holding it, so she can draw the natural, likely correct conclusion that he's about to bash in Pritchard's head.
