You need to read the original short story then. I haven't seen the movie, but in the original story..

**MAJOR SPOILERS**

The black woman is the only survivor, as well as being the "improved" model who is better than all the rest - faster, stronger, more efficient, etc.

Are you serious? If so then this Film needs to be remade, and needs to make more sense, because I didn't get the Film Version, and there was no Black Woman in the Film either that I knew of.

reply

Oh yes, I'm perfectly serious. The lead, Melantha Jihrl (looks like the movie changed her name to Miranda and made her white, and looking at the cast list it appears they changed a LOT of things..) was definitely black. She was also the first to fully understand what was happening, and the only survivor. She often said she was three steps ahead of everyone else, which was true enough, and she was the only one to treat the pilot with compassion.

Some people hate the novella but I enjoyed it. It was written in 1980 so your best bet if you'd like to read it is to look for a George R. R. Martin anthology, or look for an anthology called "The Reel Stuff" which features short stories that inspired movies.

I didn't understand the Plot so was there a Computer on the Ship that went Haywire Killing everyone? Then at the End the Good, and Evil Characters both seem to have Electrical Powers so is it safe to say that they were not Human? How did that come to be? I may have to look up this Novel, and Read it. The Film made no Sense and if you watch it you may not like it either it sucked, and it bombed at the Box Office...after finally seeing it I know why. The Writers of teh Film Version are very Racist, and a bunch of Morons who need a Life!

The plot is explained better in the book, obviously. I have not been able to locate the movie - It sounds like they royally screwed it up but I'd like to see it just to see how bad it really is.

For the plot of the short story (MAJOR SPOILERS):

The base is the same. A team of researchers hire a ship to check out the Volcryn, a mysterious alien race that only passes through every so many centuries.

The pilot is a mysterious man who only appears by hologram. The team is suspicious of him, so they give their resident psychic a chemical to boost his power. That way he can find out the mysteries behind the ship. Well, something makes his head explode, so the team begins to blame the pilot. The team dies off one by one, dying in gruesome circumstances as they attempt to find out what's going on.

Melantha, the black woman I mentioned before, is the first one to figure it out. Basically, the pilot is the cross-sex clone of the original owner of the ship, who he calls "Mother". She was very strong in telekinesis, and hated humans for treating her badly. When she died, she imprinted herself on the crystalline memory core of the ship. While Royd can USUALLY keep her under control, their prying into his secrets triggered her rage.

The end of the book has a showdown between Royd and his mother, which kills him and leaves Melantha the only survivor. He also imprints himself in the core though, so the very end is Melantha journeying with them, studying the Volcryn, until the time comes that she is ready to pass away and can fulfill his final wish - to not be left alone with his mother.

You can find the Film on Youtube in bits, and pieces where you will see that the Main Female Heroine is A Gentile not A Hebrew-Israelite like the original Storyline as you have told me. To find it just Type in Nightflyers 1987 Film on the Youtube Page. I believe there are 7-9 Parts of the Film you have to watch it in Pieces to see the Film. In the Film the Antagonist actually has a Body as well at the end in the Final Battle the Evil Killer is revealed to be Grotesque in the Face (though I seen worse) he has a Body, and appears to be all-male. He has a British accent as well. I seen a Decapitated Body doing all the Killing in the Film he also managed to take Uncle Phil's(James Avery) Knife and use it against him when he tried to Kill him, and then Laughed at him..how can a Decapitated Body Laugh, or even Talk? SMH!

Cool down. It's just movie. I have not read the original novella, but I think the movie's a really fun 80s sci-fi flick. Good score by Doug Timm, whose life was unfortunately, cut short by being stabbed 2 years later.

The Writers of teh Film Version are very Racist, and a bunch of Morons who need a Life!

How is Robert Jaffe a racist just because a movie he wrote features 1 black guy getting killed? I myself, don't agree with the concept of 'token black guy always getting killed in a sci-fi or horror flick', but like I say, it's just a movie. Also, the 'need a life' insult is so old, it's now checked into an old age home.

If they changed the race of the main characters thats messed up. How much cooler would this film been with someone like Pam Grier in that role.

reply

Well, it's not like he was the only one. In fact, he's ahead of most of the Black Guy Dies First movies, since he's the LAST good guy to die.

But I do agree it was totally racist to not cast a black woman as Melinda, since the character in the original novella was explicitly stated to be black. I didn't mind all the "improved model" genetic-improvement stuff (which struck me as very ubermenschy) being cut out of the story, but there was no reason whatsoever to not cast a black woman.

James Avery's death scene was the most riduculous death tho. Not because of him - he was fine - but because he was being attacked by a headless corpse that was saying, "Hello darling!" Avery's expression just says, "WTF is this?!" the whole time.

BTW just a tip, pleez put spoiler warnings on there. This post spoiled that Avery was gonna die.
