According to one of the Posters on here the Movie is nothing like the Novel so the Remake could have some of what happened from this Film on here, but this Time make the main woman character Black like she was in the Novel.
shareShe doesn't HAVE to be black, but aspects of the novella that would, I think, play well on screen:
(1) Adara as an AI, much more of a "haunted ship" than having her be some animated zombie
(2) Royd & Adara's final fate, sharing control of the Nightflyer
(3) the volcryn as a giant "ship" heading out from the galaxy's core, instead of a ripoff of the "Dark Star" ripoff of Bradbury's "Kaleidoscope"
(4) the sombre ending where the ship and Melantha survive, but she agrees to spend the rest of her life alone on board with the dueling AIs as penance for her failures
I can't see why any of that would've have played onscreen back then; definitely would play well now
