OMG! A Night of the Demons remake!

I just have to say. They're a lot of great topics and posts for this movie. Related to questions about the movie and questions about the characters. Awesome fans out there!
I just saw the remake to "Night of the Demons", and OMFG! Edward Furlong and Shannon Elizabeth should be banned from acting or watching horror movies made. I'm not even writing this post under that movie, just because.
This is one of those movies that can't be remade. It's 80's, it's teen horror, and it's late night b-movie fun. A HUGE part of what made 80's horror successful in my childhood. I'm not even going to compare the two movies. There is no comparison between the two, how about that.
"Night of the Demons" is haunted-house meets teenagers. You have a lot of teen movies from the 80's, from camps to babysitters. But this movie gives you one thing those movies don't, Possessed by Demons. Besides "The Exorcist" and the franchise of movies, "Demons". Oh and one of my top favorites, "Evil Dead". How much more greater Demon related horror movies are out there? Very few I promise.
I've watched this movie many Halloween nights, at least 5 roughly. Every one of those Halloweens, in control of the TV I showed someone who hadn't seen this movie previously. And they absolutely loved it and was entertained. It can't get any better than watching a movie Halloween night if you're not watching a horror movie that takes place on Halloween night. Which is exactly why I also love the 1978 movie, "Halloween".
Okay here's another movie, "Hell Night". Starring yours truly Linda Blair(The Exorcist), which also takes place Halloween night. I guarantee you, you'll love the movie "Night of the Demons" for if you had these two choices of what to watch.
"Night of the Demons" is an 80's gem.

I haven't seen the remake, and from all the reviews I don't think I will. I love the original, and own all 3 of the series. The one thing I can't agree on is "Hell Night". I bought it on vhs a couple years ago and just just couldn't take it. But thats just my thoughts on it. Halloween is coming up and I'll be digging out my copy of NOTD very soon as well.

I couldn't agree with you more and the original "Halloween" is my favorite horror movie. I have "Hell Night" on DVD and love it!
I haven't seen the NOTD remake yet (only shown in London), but from the reviews I scanned, it must be a real stink-fest. Now it's supposed to be released here in September, but I'm in no hurry to see it anyway.
You're right, NOTD should never be remade because the characters and soundtrack involved will never be matched.

I don't hold this film as dear to my heart as all of you but only because I only watched it once growing up and didn't pay enough attention. I totally agree with how you feel though as the idea of the Fright Night remake makes me a bit sick and the horrible disgusting mess that was The Lost Boys sequel should be a warning to all fans.

I'll need to find this online somewhere to watch I remember the trailer really well I think it might have been on an old Return of the Living Dead 3 video tape I had.

The director of House of the Devil and Cabin Fever 2, Ti West is the only director I would trust with a remake of a classic 80s horror he just manages to recreate the feel of 80s horror really really well.

reply

I think they could totally make a good remake of this, but it seems like this remake is crap.

But hehe i really disagree with the person who said Ti West should make the remake. Ti West? Man Cabin Fever 2 was so incredibly awful that Ti West shoudn't even be allowed to make another horror movie. House of the devil was mediocre. The Roost was really bad. Ti West keeps on trying to make 80's style horror movie but he just fails to get the right 80's feeling for his movies.

I agree. "Cabin Fever 2" especially reeked and they even stole music from "Prom Night" which I love. Grrrr!

well i guess i have to be the one to disagree with everyone. lol

i can't see how the remake can be any worse, i just watched the original and my god it was terrible on every level. wasn't even bad in a cheesy 80s sorta way or charm, it was simply a bad movie. maybe its one of those movies you had to have seen growing up and nostalgia sorta blinds you. that isn't a knock to any of you, i own many movies i know i'd find terrible had i only see them today for the first time. but i didnt and saw them when young so there's a weird connection to it. lol

guess i can scratch another classic/genre movie i hadnt ever seen that turns out to be bad for me off my list. the fact it takes almost an hour before the "night of the demons" even starts off didnt help. and my god was the lead actress terrible, the girl dressed as Alice i mean. the others had good enough acting for that sorta movie but she was just bad. but if figures she had the nicest body of them all but we only saw her ass and her bra...good girls being teases are evil. :P

anyway i recently saw Part 3 but i knew that one would suck since its canadian and we aren't exactly known for quality movies, much less horror ones. lol guess there's just Part 2 left though i hear even fans dont like that one much.

oh but gotta love the 80s.....the old man manages to swallow some blades halfway down his throat before he even realizes they're in there, nice. lol

hey all! i worked on the NOTD 2010 (even though it was shot in 2008). By all means I'm not saying its better than the original. Nothing can beat the whole 80s vibe it had going on. I recently viewed the remake and it is very entertaining. Basically a reinvisioning. Totally different backstory. Hopefully you all will give it a shot. The main leads are likeable which was something that the original lacked. Has a little bit of tongue and cheek humor which seems out of place in some parts. Overall its better than part 3 and I'd say on par with part 2.

I would rank em as followed:

NOTD
NOTD2 and NOTD 2010 tied
NOTD3

Was only a featured extra in it tho. Played one of the ravers.

I agree with you Bouncy. The thing is I actually watched this as a teen in the 80s and remembered loving it. I just viewed it again last night for the first time in 20 years and it's a stinker. The acting is atrocious and the movie draaaaaaaaags. It takes almost 50 minutes before something actually happens.

Maybe try paying attention next time!

There's nothing to worry about as far as this remake is concerned. It looks the way it is... and that's crap. The demons in the original were far more realistic in their simplistic makeup, well simplistic compared to todays makeup effects. The poor CGI demons are lousey in the remake. The original movie had a better atmosphere as well. Better tension, etc. This remake is just another piece of trash cash in on a classic from the eighties. If the original is sh_t then why are they trying to copy it in the "remake" they don't remake crap you know. It's only movies people care about that they rape with needless remakes.

Yeah, and the remake sucks! Especially in compairison to the original... like all remakes do.

You know those "do not call" lists that control telemarketers? I think we need a "do not remake" list to control Hollywood. You know why 80s and early 90s horror is so great? Originality.

A movie like NOTD could never get made today because it would never get distribution. There's no appetite for risk. Hollywood "horror" is taking what has a cult following - something safe - and wringing more money out of it. Movies like NOTD, Nightmare on Elm Street, Hellraiser, and The Thing are of their time. They have already done their part to push horror forward. By definition, remaking them can add nothing significant or new. They are empty curiosities that earn revenue off of the poor suckers like us horror fans that want to see how badly our childhoods are being poked in the pucker. (I kind of give Rob Zombie a pass here because of the love he puts into his remakes.)

Now with digital streaming and a stronger indie scene, we've got another opportunity for young directors to step outside the data-driven, revenue forecasted, audience tested, PG-13 prison. Netflix, Amazon Prime and streaming channels like Impact are giving A- and B-grade horror some exposure. James Wan, Ti West (love him or hate him), Eli Roth, and Adrián García Bogliano are writing and directing new influential films. The pieces are in place. Let's move past what's already been done, stop the remakes, and maybe give people a reason to take in some modern midnight cinema.
