Themes of humanity and how they messed it up

It worked so well that Caleb would be given a second chance at humanity, because the whole time he was a vampire he would not kill, he even tried, but couldn't bring himself to do it. He never truly lost his humanity. He was Near Dark as the title points out. Mae on the other hand, had been killing for a few years, she was past darkness, why on earth would the script give her back her humanity. It destroys the themes of the film, and it's simply bad storytelling. I suspect that there was studio pressure to give the film a happy ending.

I agree. Mae was potrayed in a very unbelievable way - a nice, honest, innocent sweetheart... that kills innocent people every night and drinks their blood. I mean, come on! I found it to be a very weak characterisation.

Mae regains her humanity when she defies the cult to defend Caleb and Sarah, she has a change of heart and turns good, and is rewarded for it.

Does that negate her serial killing over the years? No, but vampirism is a disease that transforms you into a blood-sucker, and now she’s free of it.

Given that she’s no longer a threat I’m happy for her to live her days with a guy who also suffered the same bizarre experience, and live a quiet life alone with her traumas and terrible secret.
