agreed totally

This movie will go down as a classic and probably the best Indian movie made.
Nayagan was the movie that shot Manirathnam into fame. songs are ultimate and kamal even beats his acting in pushpak.

I have a question?

how do we upload photos for movies in imdb. why are charging for it. i mean if an upcoming model wants to get noticed maybe he/she wants to spend money and upload photos into imdb, but for movie psoters is there any other way, after all it only makes imdb collection more complete.

reply

Not too sure about it. It is a good movie and all that. But it is heavily inspired. What I found totally ironic was you copy a hollywood movie and send it to hollywood for oscars(what was mani thinking ???)

reply

Its not quite "copy"...plz dont throw that word around so easily.
It's more like inspiration...Sure it seems Godfather-ish and even adapts a few scenes from the movie but the dialogue, story and musical presentation arent quite the same as The Godfather.

reply

Heavily inspired...Is that a better word?

SPOILERS
********
The cops daughter gets raped and comes to Velu for help.
A friends daughter gets raped and comes to Godfather for help.

END SPOILER
***********

If you watch the gait and mannerisms of both, you will see the "coincidence".

The plot was indianised. I agree on that. But the basic inspiration is there, with some modification.

Sidenote: The hospital scene was played out in Agni Natchathiram.

Godfather is based on the novel written by mario puzo.. Does that mean that godfather is not a good movie?? . Nayagan draws inspiration but it has its own qualities.

reply

Godfather was a line by line adaptation of the novel
whats original or new about that ?
Nayagan on the other hand, though simillar in some aspects , scores above in its picturisation, powerfull dialogues and amazing background music.
come on guys, how can u forget these dialogues ?
grandson : neenga nallavara, kettavara
kamal : theriyalae pa, theriyalaee....

daughter : do u think what you are doing is correct ?
kamal : naalu perukku naladhu panradha irundhaa, ethuvume thappu illa!!!

eternal man....

YES IT WAS HEAVILY COPIED LIKE MANY OTHER MOVIES IN BOLLYWOOD

reply

you are copied from ur father and mother..so go kill yourself, you ignorant filth..

reply

?? your dumb comment is the result of illiteracy in your region, i know you are obsessed by tamil flicks but one must admit the facts. and the fact that this movie is a rip off of godfather. although i agree with this movie being one of the best films ever made but the plot was blatantly copied

reply

Your '??' tells me how dumb you are..and btw, dont bother..I am not gonna blame your 'region' for your dumbness..coz that would be as dumb as anybody can be,which you are..

All this aside, reading my comment now, even I am not quite sure why the tone of it is so rude and dismissive..that should ve been something like a rhetoric with some humor..anyways, maybe your recklessness in grossly generalizing a movie industry and that 'caps lock' got to me..

reply

even I am not quite sure why the tone of it is so rude and dismissive

what else can i expect from a low life guy defending his favorite movie star..

and that 'caps lock' got to me

to err is human

Dear mr Mallu, i know you are trying too hard to defend your God(mr. kamal hasaan) but you failed in it..

reply

Okay..After pondering how should one reply to something tat is flooded with presumptions..Should I refute one by one to show how silly you are..have decided not to take you seriously..so good bye..

reply

you've really gotta be retarded if you're gonna call this movie a rip-off... its a strong word, mind u.. true, Coppola's gangster epic The Godfather is one of the best movies ever made, or must i say, adapted.... Coppola adapted it from Mario Puzo's novel and he did so with masterful precision and made it his own.. I'd say what Nayagan did was pretty much on the same lines.. Mani Ratnam merely pays his homage to The Godfather, and cleverly adding to it a hint of Varadaraja Mudaliar's life story, he creates something so very elegant, so very monolithic and in every sense of the word - original.. no soul had tried something of this sort in Indian cinema before and for that, Mani Ratnam has always held a special place in my heart... Maybe ardent fans of The Godfather try to stand their ground by claiming similarly-themed movies as rip-offs but i gotta tell you people - not Nayagan.. never Nayagan.... as far as i'm concerned the movie was very much ahead of its time, at least in India... go watch it again bro, without prejudice this time..

reply

Yes it should be but from my understanding it has to have 1000 votes before it gets counted on any of the IMDB lists. So far we're 700 short.

i agree completely. this movie should be on the top 250. i would not consider the top 250 to be correct unless movies like xmen 2 toy story and monsters inc are not thrown out and movies like Nayakan and Buñuel's los Olvidados are not included on the list.

reply

Dont know about whether it should be in the top 250 or not, but ya, definitely one of the best indian films i've seen ever. Superb performance by kamal hassan. He displays such range, such depth. Was bowled over! The best i've seen from him so far. Oh ya, many scenes are a copy from the godfather films, if you pay attention you'll notice. Doesn't spoil anything though, still a very good film.

reply

agree it has to be

reply

It doesn't have enough votes.

For it to be on the list, it needs at least 1300.

Nayakan is great, but not better then godfather.

The Godfather has much deeper story then Nayakan. When the door closes in the final scene of the godfather and the camera cuts to micheals wife is a masterpiece.

reply

Nayakan s a great movie and to me better than Godfather. But i doubt if it will ever enter the top250. Even if it does, the whole world is just going to notice how this movie was ripped off from The Godfather.

reply

Lets put it this way...Nayakan is not a remake...it is not indianized either...it is also adapted from Mario Puzo's novel but not in a line by line manner that Godfather did...

By the way, do you see a single Indian film in the top 250?
No Indian films ever made it there, not because they are any bad but simply because of not enough of votes and a very, very obvious bias.

Nothing beats Indian cinema when we churn out genuine quality...The best and the worst I've seen in my whole life has come from here, this industry.

If Nayakan makes it finally (when i'm writing this, the movie already has 1360 votes with a 8.6 rating, should be in the top 250, but its apparently not) it would be a great day for Indian cinema, and movies such as Hey Ram, Mahanadhi, Iruvar, Kannathil Muthamittal, Rang de Basanti, Swades should all follow. These, along with Nayakan, are among the best you will find anywhere.

Our movies are not any less great just because we have songs, and sometimes its just too easy to point fingers at our movies and say 'thats a copy!'. Nothing in this world is original, we all get inspired and not all the good movies we make here are blatant remakes. Directors like Mani Ratnam are one of the best in the whole world, and actors like Kamal is somebody you wont find even in Hollywood (10 roles in a single film!).

reply

Nayakan is based on the real-life Bombay underworld gangster Varadharaja Mudhaliar, not The Godfather! There have been many gangster movies made long before The Godfather. Having some similarities, which is bound to be the case for gangster movies, that does not mean one copied the other.

"WHO THE HELL DO YOU THINK I AM???!!!!!"

reply

I totally agree! this should be one in the top 250 ,simply a masterpiece and one of the best Tamil movie ever !!

reply

Hey!!! Nayakan was never inspired by Godfather. Nayagan is based on the life of a real-life Bombay underworld don - Varada or Varadarajan Mudaliar, and sympathetically depicts the struggle of South Indians living in Bombay (now Mumbai).

See This: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Varadarajan_Mudaliar

Though it bore some resemblance Mani Ratnam was truly inspired by Varadarajan Mudaliar. Now don't say Mudaliar was inspired by Godfather (would be absolutely ridiculous). I agree it is termed the 'Godfather' of Indian cinema not due to it's resemblance but in due respect of this master piece.

No actor other than Kamal Hasan could have done justice to the role of Velu Nayakan. The Maestro Ilayaraja's music was 'the soul' of the movie.

It excellently deserves a place in IMDB Top 250. Jai ho! Nayakan

reply

Definitely this film should be in top 250. Those who have seen GF 1 and 2 won't say it's nayagan is adapted from GF. Both are classics with different stories

reply

Absolutely my friend !!!
Nayagan is a masterpiece !
For me its the best Tamil movie ever made ! may be even the best Indian movie!
many are saying its Godfather's copy; its just a mere inspiration; just the theme or the idea on which Nayagan was made was that of Godfather !
there are a lot of differences moreover ! the background score and dialogues of Nayagan are truly marvelous ! Ilayaraja was at his very best ! This movie deserves to be in top 250 , but just got unlucky...had Tamil been India's national language story wud have been entirely different !!!

reply

top class movie, deserves a place in the top 250 easily.

its not a rip off of Godfather, while i do agree it has been inspired from it. just watched it now, really happy i saw it.amazing acting by hasan as well :)
