Age difference?

Did you all know that Nicolas Cage was only 23 when this was made? And that Cher was 18 years older than him? She was 41! Pretty funny, considering he's supposed to be Johnny's younger brother, and that Danny Aiello (Johnny) was in his fifties!

reply

I know. It is funny, and weired at the same time. So, since it's now 20 years later, Nicolas Cage is just NOW about the same age Cher was back then.

I think Nick was outstanding in Moonstruck he's offbeat tbut that's the idea.

reply

He was great in the film.

And in the end, the love you take is equal to the love you make.

This is one of the few movies that I liked Nicolas Cage in. I feel it's his best work.

reply

I love that it's not even mentioned in the movie. I think they had great chemistry. One of my favorite movies.

Also, Olymipa Dukakis is only 16 years older than Cher. She says in the movie that she was in her late thirties when she started having children. That part was always a little unbelievable because Olympia did not look that old. Of course, it's no more unbelievable then two people falling in love in one afternoon.

Because of this movie I always wanted to see LaBoheme. For years and years. Finally got to see it a few months ago at the Met. Awesome! And the funny part is Mimi and Rodolfo (from LaBoheme) fall madly in love in the course of an hour or so also.

There are no coincidences in a great movie.

reply

Oooh, good reply Moonlight. My thoughts exactly. Age differences IRL coincides with Perry's character who is known for dating younger women, only flip-flopped b/w Cage and Cher. Coincidence? Dunno? It bothered me the differences, but not enough to distract it from being one of my fave five movies of ALLLLL time.

You're an idiot. I suppose you like Sarandan's buggy eyes.

Cher was beautiful in her day but she hasn't aged well. Regardless of your tirades about Sarandon, she has aged much better than Cher. She's still a beautiful woman. Even an extreme right wing racist like you oh9 should be able to see that. Unless of course you're blind in addition to being stupid.

I just need to ask this okay? How do you know he or she is a racist and homophobic?

Look at some of her other posts. She's also an OCD age freak.

Pointing out justppl/oh9's racism, homophobia and ignorance daily

reply

That was one of the points, of the movie. That age does not matter. Not with those two, anyways.

Yeah, I remember watching it when I was a kid (This was about 10 years ago and I was about 14. It was released in the same year I was born) and something came up in the film about Cher's character being 37. I remember thinking "Um, Nic Cage is only, like, 37 NOW so how much older is she then him" and then checking to see when the film was made.

I still think it's kind of refreshing though. To this day I'm not sure if he was just playing "older" or if there really was that huge age difference and the characters just didn't really care. Either way, there are so many movies where the leading man is like 20 years older than the leading female it almost NEVER gets mentioned (Jessica Biel and Nic Cage in "Next" comes to mind actually) that it's refreshing to see a film (especially one made so long ago) give age the same treatment in spite of the gender reversal. The whole "cougar" stuff that people go on about nowadays is so offensive and sexist.

Oh GOD BLESS YOU for saying that.

Let's just say that God doesn't believe in me.

The age difference between Ronnie and Loretta was a huge sore thumb.

I am pretty sure - although they never said his age in the movie - he was playing a much older character than he was... Maybe not 37, but I wouldn't be shocked by 33/34...

I LOVE Nicolas Cage, but he's never been a fresh-faced actor... As a result, he seemed to always get paired with older actresses back in the day (did any of you ever see "Peggy Sue Got Married" with Kathleen Turner?)... Granted she was only 10 years older, she was still significantly older... It's funny because when you watch the "behind the scenes readings," he looks all Twilight-ish (that was the freshest I ever saw him)...

I really think that's why it was never discussed... The director (Norman) said that the studio did NOT want him in this role because he was SO young... To me, that means his character is older, while everyone is focusing on the actor... If that old lady that was on her death bed was supposed to be his mom, CLEARLY he was a lot older...

When Cher took out the gray and plucked those brows, she COMPLETELY closed that obvious gap...

People seriously can't deny that she is a beautiful woman... I personally think she still is... But, I am a female, I am sure men will have their own opinions on how she's aged...

You people are the disease, but I've got the cure. ~Morgan on "Chuck"

Just goes to show how standards change. In SUNSET BOULEVARD (1950), so much is made about about Norma's age (52, I think) and how washed up she is and how gruesome it is that she would even think about romancing Joe Gillis. Of course, now Norma would have a career like Glenn Close or Meryl Streep and date anyone she wanted!

I had NO idea that Nicolas Cage was only 23 years old at the time! He's always been a handsome man, just not "boyishly" handsome. I figured him for late twenties in the movie and Cher seemed maybe 35. Not a vast difference in ages considering some movie pairings! Jimmy Stewart was old enough to be Grace Kelly's father in Rear Window.

Some people look older than their age and some look younger. I was so surprised when I found out that Ralph Macchio was 31 when he played a college kid in My Cousin Vinnie. If they had paired him with his boyish looks with Cher, it would have looked like Loretta was taking her son to the opera!

TV and film have always played fast and loose with the way they cast people without regarding their real ages. In North by Northwest Jessie Royce Landis was only eight years older than Cary Grant and she played his mother.

More unbelievable was the character actress Eleanor Audley playing Oliver Douglas's mother on Green Acres. Eddie Albert , her TV son, was only one year younger than she was.
