Uniform question
Somewhere in this board/ comments section someone asks why if they're agaianst the Nazi regime (in a Penal unit) they are in an elite SS Division with skull collar patches. In fast their uniforms are those of standard German Army tank troops. The uniforms were black to hide the oil stains/ dirt etc (like the British Tank regiment for instance), the skulls are tradition badges that pre-date the Nazi regime. Even the British 17th/ 21st Lancers have a skull badge on their uniforms!
Sadly, on being captured some of these troops were executed by Allied troops who thought they were SS members, whilst some captured SS troops escaped death because they were wearing bland all camouflage uniforms (the Waffen SS were decades ahead when it came to camouflage uniforms). I know this because I was told of it by a WW2 veteran, and also the son of a WW2 veteran who said that his father sometimes killed German prisoners in WW2. Of course these killings were war crimes (including killing captured Waffen SS troops, especially when you consider that the Waffen SS took Allied prisoners and often treated them well, such as at at Arnhem), nevertheless it's a sad fact that after the heat of battle and friends had been killed ALL sides sometimes killed prisoners in WW2.... 😢
