Is this the movie?

Lately I've been looking up movies and TV shows I used to watch as a child. I think this is one of them, but am unsure.

I remember there being a relationship between two classmates in a school. From what I've read about this movie, that's obviously a part of this film.

The only other thing I remember is a scene that takes place around a lake. Maybe the two boys are swimming in it? I recall a tree with a large branch that extends out over the lake, with one of the two boys lying on the branch.

That sounds kind of vague, but could this be the movie? :)

reply

Doesn't sound like it. Might be Another Country or Hollow Reeds.

The swimming scene sounds more like the nude swimming in "Room With a View", also starring Rupert Graves and Simon Callow, and also starring Julian Sands.

But in A Room With a View there is no school

He toughens and withdraws and keeps himself guarded.

I beieve you are recalling the 1972 Paroumant version of "a Separate Peace" filmed at Exeter, Academy, NH. with John Heyl and Parker Stevenson. It maybe that film if it was American and not English.

reply

A-ha! The title A Separate Peace rings a few bells. I remember reading it in school (forget which grade), then seeing the movie in class; I have a feeling this could be it.

Luckily my library has a copy, so I'll be able to find out in a few weeks. :)

They even have the Criterion of Maurice, so I'll check both out.

Thank you all. :)

If you saw it on tv, chances are it was "Brideshead Revisited". There was a scene where they were lying on the grass under a tree next to the lake.

Funny that I found this topic because I was just watching a wonderful, indie film called Weekend and guess what is mentioned? A scene with Rupert Graves and several of the other young lads running around the lake naked. The movie that was discussed is Room With A View, which has already been mentioned. So there's your answer.
