the town where i grew up.

I was only 12 when the big movie people came to town.you would think the president was coming the way the towns folk were acting.for a town with only about 50 or so people, this was a big deal.my biggest memory was meeting james earl jones.he was the voice of darth vader and he was a god to me.lots of friends and relatives got parts as extra in the film,i got paid 20 to sit in a train while they filmed the scene were they brought in the african americans.my best friend can be seen walking down the hill in the distance as joe talks to bridy mae at the train station.as joe walks down the street my greman sheepard named "drifter"runs by.in the scene i am at the end of the street with bacon and someone is holdding him on the other end.I love the movie because it takes me back to a town that is close to my heart.I overlook all the sterotryps and just enjoy the movie.Ok i'll tell you a little more of what happen while the movie crew was in town.antoher buddy of mine went to ask for a job on the movie.the guy said ok take this gun up to the prop man.when he got there the prop man took the gun and shot him;but it was loaded with blanks.but my buddy didn't known that and he never went by there again.the car the felts agents used was so week it wouldn't pull the hills in town.the after the big explosine and they drive down the street and turn the corner it goes up a steep hill and had to be pushed up.also the scene were joe is found shot to death is on the oppiste side of town that he entered.well hope everyone likes what i shared with them,if you would like to hear more just ask.

I'm actually from kermit but Id never seen this movie till this year in high school because I don't go to Mingo County schools. It was pretty amazing to see all the places I new so well. I wasn't around when this was happening but my dad remembers it really well and said it was awesome to have some many people around.

I am also from Matewan. I left for college in 1987 and never went came back. C'mon though... 50 people? I think the town population is more like 1200.

After following some of these underground coal-mine accidents that have made the big news recently, I think this movie engenders even more special meaning. I will always remember the scene at the end of the movie, with the "kid" (preacher boy) with the coal grime on his face. Most people don't even know that such workers exist, and even if they did, they'd prolley just look the other way if they passed them on the sidewalk. Coal mining - it's a dirty business in more ways than one!

I think the town used for filming was Thurmond, and so yes, the population would have possibly been 50 or less at the 1980's filming time. It is now like 7. Thurmond was a "stand-in" for Matewan. I think you mis-understood the statement.

reply

I thought the original poster was referring to Matewan, not Thurmond. Have no idea what the Thurmond population is or was.

reply

sorry i ment the town were it was filmed,Thurmond.and i think it was probly less than 50.

I grew up in Red Star and remember riding my bike down to Thurmond. I wouldn't trade those memories for anything in the world!

Thurmond now has a pop of less that 5 people, its a state park and a cool place to go to, its peaceful, I love it.
