Early Small Town America

Were all small towns in America rough like this in the early part of the 20th century? It just seemed everyone had an attitude, and if you were an outsider you had no chance of making any friends. Were there any friendly people in these kinds of towns? Did anyone have a sense of humor?

It's remarkable that in this film, local Whites (Scot-Anglo-Saxons), Blacks, and Italian immigrants cooperated and formed an alliance against the mining company.

By the way, Reds (Communists) oppress trade union more than Capitalist do. Any organized labor in Communist China?
