actually its not homework i'm just putting the question out there. i thought it could be an interesting topic for discussion but apparantly not with you. and yes i know what the word foil means.

A foil character plays opposite the main character or an equal to the main character. The foil character emphasizes the strengths or traits of the main character by contrast. The straight-man in a comedy team is called the comic foil.

In that sense, I don't really think this movie does have any "foil characters", to answer ashleya10s original question. Unless you would consider Kenehan and Lively, or Sid & the two detectives, to be foils. It was really much more of an ensemble cast, a tapestry in which the various individual characters blend together to create the sense of a community in the story.
shareThe foil character would probably be the preacher kid. I assume Chris Cooper's character was considered the main character.
