This is a pro-2nd Amendment movie

Being a left-wing guy, John Sayles may not have intended it that way, but it is. Sid Hatfield thwarts the Baldwin-Felts attempt to evict the miners by deputizing them and telling them to go home and get their guns. And of course in the final shootout, the townspeople use their firearms to decisively defeat the company goons. This is exactly what the Founders had in mind when they passed the Second Amendment; ordinary people using their firearms to defeat tyranny.
