Malone + Cynthia Gibb

I'm watching this movie cause I haven't seen it in years.

Burt just kissed a pretty young Cythia Gibb and man was it creepy.

Yeah, while I like the film a lot, Malone kissing her on the lips was indeed creepy. I mean, hell, if it were my daughter and this guy I invited into my home did that, I'd assume they had engaged in some sexual activity of some sort.

A kiss on the forehead or the cheek would've come off a lot better.

If I remember She offered herself to him, and he turned her down

I remember reading about this scene years ago somewhere. There was, at one point, a plot thread where the two fall in love and thats where that scene was supposed to have been. Burt protested as he found it offensive, so that thread was modified and toned down to just the girl having a crush. Then the Hutton thread was written in. The kissing scene was left in the film despite the fact that Reynolds was told it wouldn't be. So if you find it creepy...well, so did Burt. I have no idea how Gibb felt about it, though.

She was 24 at the time, though she looks a lot younger in this film. Burt is sure not looking young here.
Imagine Burt and Cliff's hairpieces fighting it out.

I think there was an understanding between the two men that Malone would not take advantage of the daughter's crush on him. And he didn't, so relax!

I think Malone should've screwed her, she was HAWT. I wonder how young her character was supposed to be? Im thinking 18-19.

Yeah but her character's 16. Hence the creepiness.

When a 24 year old plays a 16 year old it is still considered child molestation for an adult to have sex with them?

reply

Movie police should look into it. The weirdest thing is that Malone kissed her right in front of her dad.

Wow! What a bizarre over-reading of a scene.

Malone's kiss was a kiss of gallantry.

He paid Jo a complement by kissing her (rather chastely) as he would a woman rather than as he would a little girl, in response to her profession of love. It was also an acknowledgement of the compliment he felt at being the object of her affections.

Men used to be gallant . . . as with good manners and consideration for others, it seems passé with the sort of effeminates and narcissists running around these days.

There was nothing remotely improper or suggestive about it.

Talk about over-reacting.

I agree that the scene wasn't sleazy or salacious at all. With the father present, there was no implication that the couple would have gone farther than that.

Those who enjoy being creeped out by age-inappropriate couples should check out 1959's THE LAST DAYS OF POMPEII. The romantic couple are played by Steve Reeves and Christine Kauffman (who later married Tony Curtis). Reeves was in his mid-30's, while Kauffman was only 14 years old in real life! Perhaps that's why the couple never even kiss in THE LAST DAYS OF POMPEII. Tony Curtis married her as soon as she turned 18.
