Love this film! Malkovich as you'll probably never see him again

I think this film's great. So refreshing to see John Malkovich cast against type in this. I think he handled the dual role well, and I particularly liked any scenes with Ulysses, particularly at Frankie's sister's wedding.

Like I say, John Malkovich was an interesting choice for this role. Certainly not the obvious choice - if they were making this film today, I imagine they would get someone like Jim Carrey or another comedian-turned-actor like Will Ferrell to play Jeff/Ulysses. Instead I think the film benefits from having a *real* actor in the role - definitely adds something.

"If I were to fall in love Frankie, it would be simple. I would fall in love with you."

I saw this movie as a Kid when it first came out and have always loved it and never forgot it. It's probably because, as said, Malkovich was so against type that it added something special to a plot idea that would seem more cheezy if not for him and Magnuson.

Wish I could go back and watch it over again for the first time. The bit when Ulysses kisses Frankie for the first time (at her sister's wedding) actually gave me goosebumps. It was so sweet yet sexy at the same time. And the lin he says just before he kisses her makes me melt - "But Frankie I came all this way just to be with you. I love you." Awww!

"He murders his wife every night. Other than that, I think he's pretty harmless."

I remember watching this as a kid and thinking to myself I wish an android would love like that one day. Ulysses made me melt, he was so genuinely in love with Frankie..Malkovich made me fall in love with him in this role. Never forgot it. I recently saw it again and I still got goosbumps. I loved that line too!!!!

"If I were to fall in love Frankie, it would be simple. I would fall in love with you."

He closes his eyes when he says it. Aaaahhh!!! My heart is melting again just thinking about this. Malkovich never looked better.

Other than Of Mice and Men years ago and Hitchhiker's Guide this is the only movie I've seen Malkovich in.

I haven't seen this movie in years. He did great playing two completely different personalities!

Travolta is no Divine!!! No one can replace the great Divine.

Very true. The fact that John Malkovich had done serious drama like "Places in the Heart" before this probably made him a bit of a long-shot for this role, but he totally captured the scientist and the android, both for the emotional and comic aspects. Clearly he took the part seriously instead of relying on schtick (as Will Ferrell and Jim Carrey too often do), and it paid off.

I know that this thread is from some time ago, and certainly before he did "Red"... but....

he did well in that role as well.
