Maria really got shafted.

Jesse gets her old life back, Audrey gets a second chance at a well-paid singing career, Nick gets a shot at being a big time songwriter, and Maria gets a clean kitchen. Does that strike anyone else as kind of uneven? Why does everyone get to escape the drudgery of being servants except Maria? >:(

In the film, I think Maria admitted she was fine the way she was. I could be wrong though.

Everyone got what they wished for. Maria wished for a clean kitchen. You know what they say. Be careful what you wish for, because you might get it.

In some way, I think Maria is the most likable character in the movie. She is content with the simple things. Jesse is going back to a life of luxury which we hope she will turn to being content with simpler, drug-less things. (There is a part of me that hopes for a picket fence home with Nick and a couple of children.)
Nick begins the scramble to pour hit music into the mulching machine that is the music industry. (It would be nice to have Jesse and a couple of children become a stabilizer for Nick, a sanctuary away from music and all that implies.) Merry will also join the music industry. In the years that she began her career, the music industry was so much simpler and creative. In those days, while in the studio, Jan and Dean could have an idea, call Brian Wilson and have the Beach Boys run down in the Woody and sing back-up. Now, that would take weeks, perhaps months, of lawyers, tantrums and drugs.

Maria is happy with a clean kitchen, money to send home to her family and a boyfriend whom she may one day marry. It is the important counterpoint that some people, unlike Jesse, only need simple things to be happy and fulfilled.

Or is the actress who plays Maria strikingly beautiful?
