Smith's performance is one of the best performances by an actor ever. It's a strange phenomenon how some films (and performances) garner attention, get nominations and win awards while others (like Smith's performance here) didn't and don't get the attention they deserve. Take a film like "The Trip to Bountiful" with Geraldine Page. It's a good, fine low key film and the only reason why it got any notice was that Page had built a momentum of public and critical attention. The timing was perfect and she got an Oscar for it.

"The Lonely Passion of Judith Hearne" just didn't get the attention it deserved. At the very least, Smith should have been nominated for an Oscar.

I agree with all of what you've said. One gets used to be Maggie Smith being great all the time, but as Judith Hearne she was beyond great. Even though I knew I was watching an actress performing a part, I still couldn't help getting very emotionally involved -- against my will, as it were -- in the character's extremely poignant life.

I agree that this is a fabulous performance by Maggie Smith.

I completely agree. The film is a realistic and thoroughly compelling character study in its own right but ultimately it's the power of her performance that packs an emotional punch during the second part of the film.
