A long time, no see

I saw this on TV a very long time ago, at least 10 years.

I remember one fight scene close to a castle on the shoreline.
Wonder where it was filmed at?

I don't remember if this movie was particularly good or not?
What say you?

I believe the fight scene was filmed in Portugal, but I can't be more specific than that.

There were several things I enjoyed about it.

I enjoyed the climatic swordfight between Robert Nerra (Eric Stoltz) and the Black Prince (Gabriel Byrne.)

I enjoyed the symbolism in the film. Maybe beccause, unlike most symbolism, I understood it. Just before the Black Prince appeared, it would often get cloudy or foggy. And when the Mayor of the Underground City (Paul Rhys) was throwing dice in that one scene, just after all the children had left, he rolled double ones or snakeyes, just before the Black Prince appeared.

I enjoyed that Chris Pitt, who plays Odo in the film, got alot of screen time. Probably more screen time in this film than in anyother of his films.

And note that both he and Sammi Davis, who plays Baptista in this film, would a year later, both appear in "Lair of the White Worm," but unlike in this film, when they would have some scenes together, they would have no scenes together in that film.

You're absolutely right. These scenes were shot in Portugal in a medieval village called Obidos. There are stil up there in the castle the remains from the props and scenery used in the movie.
Can you advise if there is any available DVD version of the movie?

Ridley, did this film inspire you to make Kingdom of Heaven?
