Lethal Weapon 5

Confirmed, but do we really need this?

reply

I'd prefer not.

I would LOVE to see this. Where to begin......
For starters, if you're a fan of Mel Gibson (I'm a huge fan).....this would be the proper comeback into mainstream that he deserves. Sure, he's done a handful of B-movies since having been blackballed and shunned by the two-faced hypocrites of Hollywood (engineered by people like Harvey Weinstein). Bt Mel's the man, and he deserves better than B-movie opportunities.

People love the Lethal Weapon franchise and it holds a special place in people's hearts because it has been an enduring thread about two cop buddies with tremendous chemistry and screen presence. The nostalgic appeal of LW is through the roof, as is the love for those original characters.

Seeing Mel in the character of Martin Riggs again would exorcise a lot of demons, and would also go a long way toward the public finally, fully forgiving him.....and welcoming him back into a huge, mainstream blockbuster...if only for one last time as a headliner. I mean....how amazing would it be to see Riggs and Murtaugh on-screen together again! And in this day and age!

I already mentioned the nostalgia. Do you remember where you were when you first saw the original? How about LWII? And the ensemble is a family. Their affinity for each other radiates off the screen. Heck.....how amazing would it be to see Joe Pesci come out of retirement and climb back into the character of Leo?! Seeing that cast.....Murtaugh's kids.....Leo....Butters.....Lorna....heck, even Cpt. Murphy is still alive!

Plus, don't you want to see what ultimately ends up becoming of these characters? Do Riggs and Lorna have a kid? Does Murtaugh come out of retirement, etc, etc? There are lots of topical issues that could come into play....including new technology, #MeToo, COVID, protests and distrust of the police, social unrest, a Chinese villain....a Russian villain?

And frankly, the director (Richard Donner) is an absolute legend....and at 91 (an age most of us will never hit, and if we do....we'll be too exhausted to move from the sofa to the bathroom).....he wants to direct this movie. That is amazing (and effin inspiring!) If Donner is that cool....that he's ready to take on a directing project at 91....well, I just love that.

Bring on this movie! It will take me back to great characters, and better times in life. Can't wait!

I love the movies, but honestly, they're too old for this shit.

Riggs is 8 years older than Gibson so that would now make Riggs 73. Unless he's going to investigate the nursing home I am just not seeing it. This would make Murtagh 87 now as he was 50 in the first film and supposed to be retiring.

reply

I think LW5 would avoid details like that....and the producers would assume the audience would, too.

And we would. Suspend disbelief, and just view Riggs and Murtaugh as old, past their prime cops, without feeling the need to pull out our calculators.

reply

I think they can make it work.

reply

No we don't.

reply

No, we don't need a geriatric Lethal Weapon. Even Riggs says he's becoming too old in part 4, and that was in 1998.

reply

Lord no. They wrapped it up in wonderfully in Lethal Weapon 4. Another one is ridiculous.

reply

As a Lethal Weapon fan: No. Absolutely not. Please, God, no. Just no.

reply

Agreed. I think MAYBE they could have worked if they’d done it sooner.

I've never seen anything after the original. Every time I see "LW" it gets weaker in my estimation but obviously it's the same film. Too much is a bad thing: but I understand--$$$-- the biz. I now think "LW" was flashy but ultimately silly entertainment.
