Riggs was suicidal when he was alone with his thoughts. That loneliness is the key to this character, and both the Christmas season and his unresolved grief made it exponentially worse. On the job, he was reckless and thrill-seeking, but not suicidal. It's like he'd said to Murtaugh, doing the job is what keeps him from eating a bullet. And that night with Joshua's drive-by was definitely doing the job.
