Why has Lethal Weapon 1 lost its popularity as a Christmas action movie

...while Die Hard 1 maintained its popularity?

I'd guess because of Mel Gibson's bad press from the last 10 years. Which is too bad because I think it is a better movie than Die Hard.

Lethal Weapon doesn't seem to have maintained it's popularity in general amongst many people which is a damn shame.

It was the first buddy cop movie where a white guy and a black guy teamed up without their race ever been mentioned.

It was amongst the first action movies to portray real tough guys who hurt, felt pain and cried, moving away from the one dimensional fake stuff people were used to with movies like Dirty Harry.

And more than that, it's just great entertainment.

Maybe it's Mel Gibson's personal life, I don't know but I love this movie.

i watch diue hard once almost every Christmas i watch lethal weapon 10 times a year.

Because it feels even less like a Christmas movie than Die Hard does. Die Hard at least takes place at night, which makes it look a little colder, and it features more Christmas decorations on display. Lethal Weapon largely takes place during the daytime, giving us a bright, sunny and warm-looking environment that isn't conducive to a Christmas atmosphere; you don't even really see Christmas decorations or hear references to the holidays throughout the movie!

If either movie more deserves a status as a Christmas movie than the other, it's Die Hard. Lethal Weapon's a great movie nonetheless, though.

There are some Christmas references. The movie starts with a Christmas song, we see the decorations at Murtaugh's house, Riggs is watching a Looney Toon's Christmas cartoon while contemplating suicide, a group of police offeice practice Silent Night at the station. There may be more but I'm not through watching yet.

However, I agree that Die Hard definitely feels more Christmasy.

I think the Lethal Weapon series is one of the greatest, if not the greatest cop buddy series, ever.

It hasn't, still on the Christmas list movies

The first scene with Riggs and the cocaine bust was at a place that was selling Christmas Trees.

I was about to say the same thing. "Lethal Weapon" (1987) is riddled with a slew of Christmas references.

Granted, there was no snow because they lived in California with warm temperatures, but there's decorations everywhere throughout the film.

I definitely consider it a Christmas movie. It opens with Bobby Helms' "Jingle Bell Rock" and closes with Riggs having Christmas dinner with Murtaugh's family.

This is definitely on my list of must-watch films for the holidays.

I thought about this on my drive into work yesterday.

Lethal Weapon does not only have a lot of Christmas references but also has an aspect of Christmas Stories: Family.

As it begins Riggs is still lamenting the loss of his wife. After meeting Murtaugh and his family he becomes part of that family. I think that could be the basis of a Christmas story.

I agree. Except for of course the Christmas song playing in the credits and the Christmas Tree farm scene at the beginning there's not much showing that the movie takes place on Christmas. I just watched it a while back for the first time in several years and ended up forgetting it even took place at Christmas until the end when the 2 main characters crash into a house where there is a Christmas Tree all lit up. At that moment I suddenly remembered, "Oh! This takes place at Christmas!" Also unlike Die Hard I don't think there's even one line of, "Merry Christmas!" through out the whole movie. I don't hate it. But it just doesn't feel that Christmassy. I will also argue though that Die Hard 2 feels more Christmassy to me than the first cause of snow being present through out the movie.

Nowadays when it's a white cop/ black cop buddy movie or TV show the race is always brought up. Jesus Christ enough with thatS hit!

Just gotten around to watching the first two LW films on DVD, and I LOVE them, I wish I had gotten around to seeing them sooner. I'm honestly willing to watch LW1 as a Christmas film, I might plan to watch them next X-Mas as a double feature alongside Die Hard.

I think I like it when a movie, especially an action one, is set during a holiday, mainly Christmas, cause it makes the film look more colorful. Movies today seemed to have lost that colored look.

Shane Black has always said that Christmas resonates with him, which is why he sets his films during that particular holiday, even Iron Man 3, which he co-wrote and directed, falls into that category. But yeah, I now would happily watch Lethal Weapon as a Christmas film, just for *beep* and giggles. 😜

Christmas references seemed to be more prevalent in Die Hard.

Well cos its barely a christmas movie.
Its set in sunny LA. The only xmas elements are

The jingle bell rock opening
riggs mentioning silly season to the jumper
the xmas tree coke deal scene
xmas Lights at roger's house

so zero relevance to the story , you could edit those bits out , or change them and the movie would be exactly the same

It's not a Christmas movie at all, and neither is Die Hard. Simply setting a movie in December doesn't make it a Christmas movie. A Christmas movie is specifically about Christmas, not a movie that works regardless of the month in which it takes place.

reply

Die Hard def overshadowed Lethal Weapon as THE xmas action movie.

reply

neither of them are christmas movies!
