Deserved Much More Respect

I don't know if The Last Emperor deserves Top 100 or Top 500, but it deserves much more respect. One of my favorites.

Can't help think many in the American audience don't have an interest in the subject of Chinese history and this amazing story.

A truly amazing film and an oft neglected piece of history.

It did win Best Picture at the Oscars..

Can't get much more respect than that.

One of my favorites, also.

I was sorry to find that, though an alternate version of the movie was made for showing in the People's Republic of China, a woman from China I went out with a few times replied to my question about what she thought of the film by saying: "It's all lies."

It did win 9 Oscars. Plus a bunch of other major awards. I think it already got the respect it deserved. You can't get better respect than that.

,,It's all lies''?
Did she explain what she meant?

I saw the film with a Chinese dubbed soundtrack used when it was shown in China, and the film pretty closely followed what I knew about Chinese history. Only the scenes supposedly unfit for the Chinese public (mainly the bed scene and toe-sucking) were cut in the Chinese version; the film was not altered in any other aspect.

This is a pretty moving film, and it is highly appreciated here in China.

I'm happy to see your comment (after a long time, sorry!) that this movie is highly appreciated in China.

I see other posters in this forum have said that some of the scenes about Pu-yi and the Cultural Revolution were edited out of the version shown in China, but I have no idea. It could be that at different times, those scenes were removed or left in.

If that's true of the American audience, I guess I'm the exception. Brilliant film and I found the story very compelling.
