On the radio

I'm just curious, did his family really find out he was dead on the radio. You would think they would find out he was dead before everybody else, even if it was just to confirm it was him. Don't get me wrong, I still cry every time his mom says "not my ritchie". And when Bob yells out "Ritchie! at the end, I cry all of the tears I have left in me.

I just want to know. It would be pretty crappy if you found out your family member was dead at the same time as some random fan found out.

When I'm sad, I stop being sad and be awesome instead."

Yeah, that's what happened. Same as Buddy Holly and the Big Bopper's families. No one informed them before they broke the news. That's why Buddy's wife miscarried from that trauma

Remember, this was 1959! Things have changed dramatically since then. In fact, I have read from multiple sources that because of this incident--Buddy Holly's wife miscarriyng specifically--it was made common practice to not publicly release victims' names 'til after immediate family members are notified.

I know it seems crazy that back then that wasn't common practice, but yes, that is how Ritchie's and Buddy's families found out about their deaths, on the radio. So sad :(

That's really messed up.

DISPLAY thy breasts, my Julia!

I believe they did, as if I am remembering correctly as nobody got ever thought to get contact of anybody in the families of the victims to notify them before the news broke out.
