Sad news about the actors

My father was watching this movie today and I saw the last 5 minutes of it on TCM. Robert Osbourne, the host of TCM, said that the 1990 earthquake in Iran (7.4) destroyed the village where this filmed. He also said that the boys from the movie were killed as a result of the earthquake.

Yes, very sad The movie was a heartbreaking story in the first place. Hearing about the boys and the village makes me feel like I've been kicked in the stomach.

When I heard Robert give that update, my heart sank. Ahmadpour was such a great actor. This film will live on in my memory for years. It says so much about their capacity for love and friendship!

Okay I know I just posted, but I'm currently watching "The Odyssey of Film" and they show the two boys in another film by the same director, " Through the Olive Trees" . They were older, and they were indeed still alive!

Robert Osbourne may have the dates wrong for the Iran earthquake that killed the young actors.

After doing some research, after 1990 was the 1997 & 1998 earthquake that struck Iran.....

But Osborne made his statement in the context of Kiarostami going back to the village right after the earthquake, an event that was the basis of a movie he made in 1992 (called "Life, And Nothing More" on imdb, but "Life Goes On" in the version I saw in a theater.) So it had to be the 1990 earthquake and the boys obviously survived it, as others have noted, because they appeared in Through the Olive Trees in 1994.

I already knew all this when I heard Osborne say it and just thought, "Whaaaaaat???" I think he might need to just stick to reciting the number of Oscar nominations that movies received. It's great that TCM is showing movies like this (preceded by "Days of Being Wild" no less!) but I think he may be out of his depth. Or needs to fire some people on his staff.

I was also confused by this. Osborn (TCM) mentioned the boys never being found after the earthquake if I remember correctly and Cousins (The Story of Film:An Odyssey) showed a scene in a later film with the lead character of Where Is My Friend's House.

Now I see that both boys were listed in the 1994 film - Through the Olive Trees

The confusion about the boys fate is perhaps due because in "Life goes on", which is a fictionalized story of Kiarostami looking for the boys after the earthquake, it is left ambiguous whether the boys survived. But as others mentioned, they did appear in "Through the olive trees" later on.
