Christmas movie

Jaws is not a Christmas movie. Jaws 2 is not a Christmas movie. Jaws 3-D is not a Christmas movie. But in an early scene of the fourth film in the series, Jaws: The Revenge, Brody’s son gets in a boat and a great white shark bites his arm off. He screams for help, but nobody can hear him. Then the shark returns, bites a hole in the boat and murders him for good. And why did the good citizens of Amity Island fail to respond to his cries? Because they were all too busy singing The First Noël on the beach. This means that Jaws: The Revenge is 100% a Christmas film, and everyone should watch it on Christmas Day

I don't think they sung on a beach.

I think it was downtown on mainstreet.

And that's exactly what I thought...

i always liked the christmas opening of this film

reply

Same. The film actually starts out quite well, it's once the shark rocks up in the Bahamas it goes to shit.

Although the banana boat scene is so-bad-it's-good.

true

I wouldn’t quite call JAWS: The Revenge a Christmas movie, but those opening scenes are really powerful. Hearing his horrific cries as he realizes his arm is gone is heartbreaking. The cutting back and forth between the attack and the choir is very well done. I’ve said many times that the first 10-15 minutes of the movie are excellent; unfortunately, there were another 80 minutes to go.

Jaws the Revenge has the best renditions of The First Noel and Hark the Herald Angel Sing ever put on film. It is absolutely a Christmas movie. There is also a Christmas tree and presents scene later in the film. It even includes the Boxing Day celebration, the junkanoo.

Bonus tip, if you watch this movie back-to-back with The Muppet's Christmas Carol you can have a Michael Caine Christmas marathon. Can Bruce the shark be considered a Muppet?

reply

In this instance, I would say yes.

reply

It’s one of the reasons the movie lives on in our hearts. Who can forget the Christmas morning get together including Jake and his wife?

reply

I just remembered that "Hark! The Herald Angels Sing" is sung by Louisa while Michael and Ellen are talking about family missing Sean. This means this Christmas Carol is appears not once, but twice in the film. There is also the Christmas miracle of the shark being conveniently suspended for the final blow.

reply

Perhaps the whole plot was a Christmas miracle, a possibility that hasn’t been properly explored on the board.

In an alternate world, Universal Studio didn't rush the production of this movie just to get it out in theatres because the Summer didn't have anything to offer at the movies back in 1987 when this came out and Universal rushed it to get it out right down to the shitty FX along with seeing a Hydraulic Pole sticking out of the sharks stomach in the finale.. Good for Roy Scheider for bowing out after JAWS 2 and even Scheider phoned it in despite being a decent sequel

reply

All in all, they did a decent job under the circumstances. They were under a lot of pressure and managed to produce something memorable and meaningful. Someone should commission a Broadway show about the production.
