I saw Elaine May last night

At the 92stY in NYC, she did a Q&A after a viewing of this stupid, unfunny, BORING, poorly written movie. I was told that it was the ‘directors cut’ ?? (my wife loves it and her, so I went...)
Anyhow, she was asked about the 2 hams playing against type, which is a central feature to the movie and part of its "appeal".

Not once, but three (!) times she insisted that they WEREN'T playing against type...? How can that be you ask? Because, Warren Beatty REALLY is from the south you see, and Tootsie is really from New York! So, how could they have been playing against type??

At first I thought that she was kidding, but the two subsequent reiterations of this idiotic, obtuse notion confirmed that she was indeed serious. So I'll spell it out for her in the off chance that she may end up reading this:

Dustin Hoffman is a squat little man who played a character in Midnight Cowboy called Ratso Rizzo. Go watch that movie and tell me about how appealing Dustin Hoffman is. Also, Dustin Hoffman isn't funny. Not at all. He's a weird (closeted?) homosexual, he's nervous, he's uptight, he's not the best actor, and he's not funny. So, no. He' not a lady's man. Not really, not in this world.

Warren Beatty on the other hand…

(Scroll down for the picture)

has a bio that was written about him called "The sexiest man alive"

Dustin has a bio, “Hollyweird's anti hero”

Which I have on good word the author didn't even read.

So, Elaine, they WERE playing against type. Perhaps there's a good reason, besides your insistence on not being able to find good enough material, why you haven’t directed since...Ishtar. : (
Pssst...yr a little dense.
