Criterion?

This is listed on Hulu as a Criterion release but I know that they never released a DVD or laserdisc of it. How is that possible? For those of you that don't know, Criterion reached a deal with Hulu and Criterion will be streaming a sizeable chunk of their library.

"They shoot horses, don't they?" RIP Sydney Pollack

reply

The deal includes titles that they own but have yet to release on Blu-ray or DVD.

reply

If this got a Criterion Blu Ray release i'd be VERY pleasantly surprised.

Yeah, I think some kind of mistake was made. I can't imagine such a badly made film could have gotten into the Criterion Collection with it's library of prestigious movies. If it is not a mistake, then the standards of Criterion is highly suspect. This movie was just awful and not in a good way at all!

It IS streaming on HuluPlus, under the Criterion studio listing, and it even has the little 'C' Crierion logo on its listing and before it plays.

It must be coming to Criterion.

reply

Well, that is what is.

Just the same, I don't have to like it. And I don't!

Oh no, you MUST love it and declare it a masterwork if it's in The Criterion Collection! (LOL...)

Actually, while I LOVE Criterion, this wouldn't be the first time that they've included something sub-par in their prestigious collection.

In fact, they haven't been that interesting at all to me as of late. I have found that the British BFI label and the British Eureka!/Masters of Cinema label have been putting out more intruiging fare lately.

Masters of Cinema have been on a Pier Paolo Pasolini kick lately, releasing several remastered blu rays of some of his more obscure films. And the BFI recently released Ken Russell's "The Devils"! (which still hasn't seen the light of day in the States).

I don't think I've purchased a new Crierion title all year so far.

While I do love this film it would be ruined by getting a Blu-Ray Criterion released DVD.They'd probably clean up the transfer and the look of the film would lose it's charm since it is a low-budget,shot on 16mm film.A movie like this wouldn't look good with a pristine transfer, esp.for the obvious reasons above.

I would love it to be released on a 25th anniversary special edition DVD,however, with the same transfer of the VHS,some deleted scenes, possible commentaries from the cast,IF they're still alive, and maybe re-releasing the soundtrack while they're at it.

reply

Most likely it will be on some sort of Eclipse series box set.

reply

I think it must be some sort of mistake. I can't imagine criterion releasing this. But then again, they released Equinox. On Amazon instant it looks like Eraserhead has that Criterion logo as well yet its not listed on the criterion website ..ohmm...

Criterion actually has a specific guy they hired to do a bunch of cult film releases. It's pretty great they give the Criterion treatment to Equinox, I Was a Teenage Zombie, Atomic Submarine etc. Criterion actually has a pretty rad selection of cult movies.
