Grandpa's Words of Wisdom

He says something along the lines of "Here's a life lesson for you--- never give up the punt for the pole!"

Did that make anyone else laugh??

reply

yes! :-)
and despite the havoc and hardship they find themselves pretty much the entire film, i never get tired of seeing boorman's recreated family dance and grit their way thru it all. i've seen this picture a handful of times over the years, and it's one of my favourites in any genre.

In the movie Bill is being taught how to punt by his Grandad. The pole gets stuck in the water and Bill tries to get it out and instead of letting it go and stay on the boat he ends up stuck on the end of the pole desperately trying to keep his feet out of the water as they try and steer the boat back to him using a small emergency paddle.

Thus the saying "Never give up the punt for the pole"!

Hope that makes sense!!

Patrick Warburton is a comedy genius!

I just answered this in another thread, but here goes: the punt is the boat they're in. The Brits say "punting on the Thames", meaning pushing the punt along with one of those poles. So, don't give up the boat for the pole...better let go of the pole than give up the boat, which was what the boy was about to do, had his family not grabbed him.

Nearly everything he said makes me laugh. Grandpa is chock full of comic wisdom, and I often find myself quoting him in everyday life.
"I have no friends, only relations!"

I loved the way he trilled his "r's" when he said that line!

I had my best laughter in this movie with almost all the characters in the frame, except, of course the grandpa, was when Bill soberly says to grandpa on breakfast table that he had hit the mouse in its leg in the kitchen garden, if not killed it because the mouse was limping after the shot was fired!

Fun fact: That is the same actor (Ian Bannen) who played the evil father of Robert the Bruce in Brave Heart. Certainly a different role for him! Sadly, he died in a car accident in 1999.

i love that bit. also when he says, of women "neverbtry to understand them, that road leads to ruin."
