You can google it now, this is where the film was set...The houses are not as majestic as the film yet it will give you an idea of the close quarters the neighbours all live in.

Possibly, though i had the impression that the family were meant to be living in a less picturesque London suburb. carshalton is rather leafy and rural, and woukd have been even more so in the 1940s. And it has a large pond which is very pretty. it woukd be much less of a contrast for billy going to shepperton from Carshalton than from what appears to me to be a much duller suburb.
